Asmara (äsmä'rä, äz–) , city (1996 est. pop. 400,000), capital of Eritrea, at an altitude of c.7,300 ft (2,225 m). The name also appears as Asmera. A commercial and industrial center, it is connected by rail and highway with the Red Sea port of Massawa. Textiles and clothing, processed meat, beer, shoes, and ceramics are the major industrial products. Asmara was a small village until the 1880s, when it became an Ethiopian regional administrative center. Occupied by the Italians in 1889, it became (1900) the capital of the Italian colony of Eritrea. In the 1930s, Asmara was rapidly developed as a base for the Italian invasion (1935–36) of Ethiopia; many Art Deco and other modern buildings survive from this period. In 1941 the city was taken by British forces. In 1950 the Eritreans, seeking independence from Ethiopia, reached an agreement with the government. But as Eritrean self-governance was withdrawn, the Eritrean Liberation Front was founded and an armed revolt ensued. Asmara's airport became key in the conflict as it was used by the Eritreans to obtain arms and supplies from outside supporters. It became a part of Eritrea with that country's independence (1993).

Blue Eagle:
I think you have gone down the wrong path Dato my friend. Asmara when translated to English most definately means love. There are no embellishments as the translation is direct and positive. Personaly I think "sayang" is a softer and nicer word and it more or less means the same thing ie " to be fond of " or "have affection for " . Sayang could easily be used to describe an airline as I felt that way about Malayan Airways. Regards Prince of Dzun.

Thanks for that Prince.

I put it there just out of interest, wondered if, perhaps, the story had got a bit confused as there doesn't see to be much hard info about them at the moment.

Eheh, this is quite a funny topic and some good light hearted replies. But tell me something, how can a moderator on the Far East forum be registered in Oz?
Cheers

The least we can expect as a logo is "Cupid" and his bow and arrow emblazed on the fin and rudder. If they do it correctly then it might look rather special. Some might say that an amorous depiction of Venus would be more appropriate and sit easier with the airline's name. I watch with interest.
Regards to all,

Airlines Symbol

Maybe a big red loveheart with venus's cameo inside it would best represent the new airline

MAS management involved

Capt. Wooblah started a thread stating that some the previous (sic) MAS management were involved in this in some way. The thread mysteriously died an unnatural death and suppose it was a good thing.

It would be interesting to see which way this company goes.

Now back to my ETOPS 747.

Perhaps they can use Puteri Gunung Ledang as their spokeswoman...

"When I go see Tuah...I fly Asmara Air!"

*cue the theme song Asmara Danang...

Yeah,

Blackie S.B, K@mil Sh@piri from the Airbus crash and the other Z@in@l Abidin fellow, forget his first name, they resigned as directors in fear of their jobs, but, the registra of companies would still have their names as previous directors.

Well good luck on them. They couldn't sell their asses at a gay convention.

Wooblah.

A Fokker 50 was sold to an unknown buyer by MAS acting for PMB.............rumored to be Asmara Air......Buying an aircraft with 120% load factor is suicide.

Its no longer a rumour. The punishment order came out a week ago. The three characters in the saga is to be demoted to B737 for two years (minimum). Again, this will depend on their performance report by the Fleet manager. It begins on 1st Sept 2005.

Personally, I think the punishment is rather harsh. No harm is done to anybody except themselves. Apparently they have spend quite a substantial sum of money to get the business going but to no avail.

Probaby the feud between 'Shorty' and 'Blackie' has got something to do with it.

Just curious. What's there to stop them from quiting and going to work for a Middle Eastern airline (and get more money as a side effect)?

I think that having a 744 endorsement with loads of experience is a prized possession. It'll be M@S' loss if they go.

Grrr

This is a side show by toad and his favourite cohorts to create a smokescreen. These people are harmless and did nothing to threaten the airline, nothing more than the others that are involved in telling people how to be millionaires, selling insurance and unit trust and so on. Their past records and many many years of sevice means nothing, especially black who was a former cp. These 3 hasnt even been paid by Asmara to sit on the board and as far as I know has never made any decision that would be detrimental to MAS. Asmara doesnt even have an AOC yet, they only announced that they intended to get one. This is the toad getting rid of percieved competition.

As said by Gabra1, there is nothing stopping these experienced people from leaving. Asiana's looking for 744 capts and so is Korean soon. Etihad's 744 freighter is in the picture too as is Air Atlanta. There's SIN cargo, CAL and Great Wall out of Shanghai. Many options out there. There is a agent looking for 744 capts for an airline in the far east. Could this airline be MAS?

I put this to you. Maybe toad wants people to leave! Then he can justifiably tell the board that he needs to hire expats. He gets a cut from the agent and laughs all the way to the bank. Say usd 1000 per pilot for say 10 pilots for say 5 years (this being rather conservative).

Lets watch this drama unfold, and while we're at it, will someone call the ACA.

And oh, question for Malaysian expats in the foreign airlines. Would you sign up with this agent (advertising in Flt International, 744 capt position for airline in the far east) so that you can fly for MAS again? Would be nice to fly with toad, gives you an opportunity to thumb your nose at him.

Bubye...
