just wonder if u have ATPL written and valid Multi IFR? |
Hi Takamasa,
I only have PPL but I'm planning to go for CPL and MECIR in US or AU. However, my concerns on FAA are whether the FAA ATPL theory exam is recongized as fATPL by KA and CAD and whether KA "appreciate" FAA's CPL. Cheers |
for this program, basically Ka is helping you for your conversion.
but due to the fact, they only accept conversion base on ur first license. meaning if you have your FAA PPL, you must not get a CPL/MEIFR issued by other countries. this is not Ka's requirement but HKCAD request that. so i strongly suggest you to stick with where you are and continue the training in USA. i actually cant give you the answer whether they would accept both. but what i can tell you is that USA is one of the member in ICAO. i believe they will accept that. Dont quote on me. i cant confirm atm. i will see if i can find out the answer for u. |
Thank you Takamasa. In fact I'm holding a AU PPL so this mean I'll stick to CASA thought the AU$ is so expensive now.............But I think many others here and I still want to know more about the FAA's issue.
Thanks again. |
Anyone holding FAA CPL +250 hours got called for the interview? whether the FAA ATPL theory exam is recongized as fATPL by KA and CAD whether KA "appreciate" FAA's CPL they only accept conversion base on ur first license * see wording in CAD54 Part 3 Ch 3 sec 3.8.1(e) |
fATPL
To be considered for selection as a Dragonair Pre-qualified Cadet, applicants must hold a Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card and meet the following requirements:
they only accept conversion base on ur first license Can any tell me if I do my CPL in NZ and ATPL papers in AUS if this would still be valid? Cheers |
If your existing licence is converted from another licence, please do not submit it.
The Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department will only accept your original "non-converted" licence. it's quote from the appendix of HKA flight crew application instruction. So basically u cant take short cut. like Canada, people are only eligible to write the atpl with 750 hrs. technically people can take a short cut, go to US,convert to FAA CPL,then write ATPL anytime they want. but this wont work if you want to convert ur current license to hongkong license. |
Do you have a link or any idea on how to access the CAD54?
In Australia and NZ, there is no hour requirements for sitting the ATPL exams, therefore it remaining frozen until the 1500 hours are completed. And so if what youre saying is correct, I can submit my original ICAO NZCPL license with my Aussie ICAO ATPL papers? cause in theory, those ATPL papers are just papers until its unfrozen. Cheers |

Thanks Checkerboard, appreciate it!:ok:

Hi guys,
I'm just wondering how do they usually contact you if you get an interview after handing in your application? Are they going to call you or e-mail you ? I'm little bit worry about his since I'm living in the U.S at the moment. I left the U.S contact number only on the application form. I heard that they usually give you a call if you are in H.K. |
"Like Canada, people are only eligible to write the atpl with 750 hrs.
technically people can take a short cut, go to US,convert to FAA CPL,then write ATPL anytime they want. but this wont work if you want to convert ur current license to hongkong license." Hi all, So for the applicant from Canada, what is the best way to get the written ATPL done that is suitable for the KA pre-cadet program and HKCAD? I am looking for the best place for me to take the ICAO ATPL written, but confusing now... |
Interview
I submitted my application 2weeks ago and I'm wondering how long it normally takes for the process. Somebody said they will call the applicants about 2-3 weeks after the date of submission. Is that true?
|
Just want to say thanks to Zanski for the info regarding the interview process.
It was a really big help. Just did my Medical in HK and should be going to adelaide in Jan for Flight grading. Does anyone hv any info for the DA42's that are flown at FTA? And also what is involved in the flight grading itself? I've managed to find the checklists and flight manuel from the internet but its not from FTA. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers. |
hey rookie,
I couldn't manage to get my hands on a checklist from FTA until i got there either. The DA42s at FTA have the lycoming engines (the flight manual from the diamond website still have the diesel). Read up on the VPG for Parafield from the CASA website and flip through the G1000 manual. You might also want to have a look at the approach plates for YPAD (ILS and VOR). That should be enough to get you started. |
Will do Zanski,
thanks again :) |
Hi,
Does anybody knows what's the minimum requirements to qualify for this KA Pre-Qualify Cadets Programme. I'm holding UK JAA Frozen ATPL and was told that i do not meet the mins. thanks |
yep,
its on the KA website "To be considered for selection as a Dragonair Pre-qualified Cadet, applicants must hold a Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card and meet the following requirements: Hold an ICAO Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL) with passes in all ATPL ground examinations Hold a valid 1st class medical certificate without restriction Have a valid multi-engine instrument rating Have at least 250 flying hours Excellent command of English, both oral and written" |
have u tried Cathay? They are hiring internationals but Dragonair are ONLY hiring permanent HK residents as far as i know
|
Rookie p,
I was told by KA that i'm still in the Pre-cadet file. They told me that I'm well short of hours. PIC and Night time. Do you know whether UK SPIC time is the same as HK SPIC time? If that's the case then I would qualify for the PIC section but just 5 hours short at night time. many thanks |
What address did you e-mail KA at?
There wasn't anywhere to list total time that I could see on the application form, just space for flying training, with what I assumed was hours flown during each particular training. |
How many hours of PIC and night time are they looking for?
Will there be any other requirements like PIC U/S hours? |
Wg 100, check your mail for the email address.
KA sent me the 'Flying experience' sheet once I got accepted for the PreCadet Application. 100 PIC and 10 Night time |
Thanks for that. I'll drop them a line to see whether my application is likely to get processed, or if they are holding everything for now.
Oh, and n.dave. How has your application progressed? |
My application is on hold at the moment unless I have enough hours. So frustrating after finished flight training that cost me £££££s my UK frozen ATPL is not enough to convert to HK CPL. :*
Been sending an email to HKCAD to see whether my licence and my hours are enough to convince them for a HK CPL. (Hey wg100, you in UK right? Have you tried Aer Lingus. They were hiring low hours FOs. I'm waiting anxiously for their call) |
How many more hours do you need? What are the HK CAD requirements for license conversion?
Yes, I'm in the UK and in the same boat as you. |
How many more hours do you need? What are the HK CAD requirements for license conversion? Flying experience requirements for CPL: Part 3 Chapter 1 section 1.6 Flying experience requirements for IR: Part 3 Chapter 10 section 10.4 Licence conversion application docs: Part 3 Chapter 3 section 3.8 Now, here comes the fun part. Go to the CAD website, locate and download CAD54 (a pdf document). First guy who finds all the answers to the above questions and posts the answers on Pprune gets a bottle of champagne. The rest of you, ask him all the questions you need to know about converting your licence. I have offered this prize to many student pilots but all of them have done nothing but wait for the champagne winner to give them all the answers. |
Flying experience requirements for CPL: Part 3 Chapter 1 section 1.6 The minimum flying experience required for the issue of a Hong Kong CPL(A) is 250 hours. This may be reduced to 200 hours where the applicant has completed an integrated course of flight and ground training approved by the Hong Kong CAD. These minimum hour requirements are to include the following flying hours obtained in aeroplanes:- (a) 100 hours as PIC or PIC U/S, of which, 70 hours must be as PIC. In the case of a Hong Kong CAD approved CPL/IR training, such hourscan be reduced to 90 hours as PIC of which 20 hours can be SPIC; (b) 35 hours cross-country flying as PIC, PIC U/S or SPIC of which 30 hours must be PIC. This cross-country flying should include a flight as PIC on a route of 300 nm completed in a single day, in the course of which the aeroplane landed and came to rest at not less than two intermediate and different aerodromes; (c) 10 hours night flying as PIC, PIC U/S, SPIC or P U/T, of which five hours must be as PIC. This night flying must include 10 take-offs and 10 landings without assistance, and two cross-country flights as PIC or PIC U/S or SPIC terminating at an aerodrome a minimum distance of 65 nm from the point of departure. It must also include three hours night dual of which one hour must be navigation training; and (d) 10 hours instrument flying as P U/T in aeroplanes. 1.6.2. The remainder may comprise flight time as either PIC, PIC U/S, SPIC or P U/T counted in full, or P2 counted at half rate. 1.6.3. SPIC (Student Pilot-in-command) refers to the flight time obtained in a Hong Kong CAD approved CPL/IR training during which the flight instructor on board the aircraft will only observe the student acting as pilot-in-commandand must not influence or control the flight of the aircraft. Flying experience requirements for IR: Part 3 Chapter 10 section 10.4 CAD. These minimum hour requirements must include:- (a) 100 hours as PIC or PIC U/S, of which 50 hours must be cross-country flying as PIC; and (b) 40 hours as pilot by sole reference to instruments, of which 20 hours may be in an approved flight simulator or approved procedure trainer. The instrument ground time shall be under the supervision of an instructor acceptable to the CAD. Licence conversion application docs: Part 3 Chapter 3 section 3.8 (a) a cheque for the appropriate fee made payable to “The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region”; (b) proof of nationality; (c) copy of the pilot’s licence offered for conversion, to include evidence of: (i) a civil Instrument Rating (Aeroplanes) or an equivalent flight test which included testing on VOR, NDB and ILS taken in a multi-engined civil registered aircraft, an approved civilian flight simulator, or a military multi-engined transport type aircraft with an equivalent civil version; and in each case the flight test was conducted by a civil aviation Authorized Examiner and the last date of test to be within the six years preceding the date of application; (ii) a multi-engined Aircraft Rating; and (iii) a Medical Certificate (d) copy of the Flight Radiotelephony Operator’s Licence offered for conversion; (e) copy of all the examinations results passed for the issue of the licence; (f) copy of the last six months entries of the applicant’s personal flying log book; (g) completed form DCA 605; and (h) completed form DCA 530. You are right, that was fun! |
:ugh:damit you are too fast Jabiman!
Can anybody clarify whether UK's SPIC is the same as HK's SPIC time, please? @ wg100, still got 50 pic and 5 night time to do. Doesn't make sense after I got frozen atpl + mcc + joc. If full SPIC time is counted towards PIC then I can easily do the night times. @Reverseflight, how can student claim their rewards????? |
So, from Part 3 Chapter 1 section 1.6, an integrated course allows for a reduced time requirement for license issue (as it does in the UK). So I guess the next question would be to ask the HK CAD which FTO is considered to be approved. OAA provide training in Australia, so does the approval of OAA extend company wide...?
I guess the other option would be to pay your $170 and try to get a license converted... |
Jabiman is fast becoming the knowledge guru even before the champagne winner is announced ! Yeah, keep those questions flooding in ! :D
@Reverseflight, how can student claim their rewards????? |
Lol I'm a light weight on drinks even though I consider myself to be British.
You didn't really answer my question though. |
Before I was thinking of submitting my application one semester before graduation.
Now seems like they won't interview you and give you a conditional offer if you are a little short on hours, right? I will try to submit early anyway, gotta seize every chance.:ok: and does anyone know 10 hrs of instrument training have to be real IMC or it can be under the hood? I have heard different versions...:ugh: |
and does anyone know 10 hrs of instrument training have to be real IMC or it can be under the hood? As no one seems to be eager to offer you the answers, I would rightfully claim to be the winner of the bottle of champagne. :D:D:D |
January course
Hey,
Just wondering if anyone else will be leaving for adelaide on the 8th Jan. cheers |
Advanced flight grading
Two thirds of the way through flight grading, 3 more flights to go.
So far so good. If anyone is interested, I'll be happy to write down exactly what the flight grading entails. Any takers? Rookie |
