Exclamation DGCA regulations. MATHS &PHYSICS FOR CONVERSION AND TO BECOME A COMMERCIAL PILOT

I know it's an old topic but I was wondering if the DGCA is planning to scrap this regulation. It is actually harrasing pilots of Indian citizenship to work in India without Science subjects.

West has scrapped this rule and have given the world better pilots. What is India doing for it's people?

US, UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand etc. doesn't have this regulation.

I an sure Captains who are currently flying with more than 10-15 years will disagree bcoz they worked hard and had to go a gruelling school life with Physics and Maths.

Negative or positive feedbacks are appreciated.

*I am not a pilot, I just need answers from the pilot community.*

The requirement for passing the 12th grade with maths and physics as compulsory subjects was introduced somewhere in the year 1994

Until then 10th with Maths and Science as subjects were enough

Even today if you can prove that you started flying prior to the rule coming into effect you are still eligible for a DGCA CPL

From what I have heard from a retired Indian Pilot was that someone bribed the DGCA to introduce the rule so as to prevent those who studied non science/math subjects from becoming pilots at the time

Remember 1992/1993 was the year when India witnessed its 1st Aviation Boom when the Govt of India allowed private companies to start their own airlines
Jet Airways , East West , Damania , Modiluft , Air Sahara all started up because of this new liberalisation and hence demand for pilots soared at the time

Ofcourse any pilot who has been through the Indian system with 12th Maths and Physics would realise that these are primarily aimed at those pursuing engineering or medicine or higher studies in the maths and science subjects than of any real world use to a pilot

AOPA India had started a petition to remove this requirement for PPL ( you only need 10th pass for PPL ) as obtaining the verification letter from the board was quite cumbersome for candidates who passed out decades ago
You can read about it here

http://www.aopa.in/20130624_scion_ao...ertificate.pdf

I have seen this system also harass a lot indian pilots that did not study at an Indian Govt approved Education Board ( especially NRI's )
They had to run after the Association of Indian Universities in New Delhi in order to obtain an EQUIVALENCY CERTIFICATE saying that their 10th and 12th grade is equal to the Indian 12th standard

While I doubt the rules will be changed anytime soon there is something you can do

I have seen many pilots of commerce background take coaching , study and pass physics and maths ( if they didnt have maths in 12th ) from the National Institute of Open Schooling aka NIOS
Home: The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)

I believe the exams are on demand so you can give it when you feel you are ready . I dont know what the marks are in order to pass but i think its around 33 or 35%

The DGCA does not care how much you score as you long as you pass and they accept Maths and physics from NIOS provided you have the Indian board or equivalent 12th std pass

If you can score 55% or above in Maths , Physics and English individually then you will be eligible for the IndiGo Cadet Pilot program .
Although expensive this is a pretty good program for an Indian Citizen in order to make it as an airline pilot in India especially given the large number of unemployed pilots
For more details look at the following link
Indigo Pilot Program - CAE Oxford Aviation Academy

Thank you cyril. DGCA's regulation are so useless and ancient, however I still have a hope that it will change.

However you mentioned NIOS, I wanted to know if the subject of physics and Maths can be given individually or I have to give every subject like english, PCM and a language?

How long does it take to complete the NIOS subject and reach a level to give exams.

What topics do they cover? Are they tougher than state boards and CBSE?

You can email me on [email protected]

I gave my physics exam through NIOS , back then they use conduct twice a year but as the demand for these exams grew they started conducting on weekly bases , the same can be checked directly with NIOS or their website . Yes you can just give a single paper through NIOS ,as I had commerce in my 12th hence i had to give physics both practicals and written .

This is just one of the very STUPID and IDIOTIC rules that DGCA has but now that you have chosen to be a pilot in India then its better you get use to more and more illogical stuff to come in future.

Keep your calm , if you have passion for aviation , you will success , no DGCA ASS can ruin that .

all the best

Thank you for sharing your experience. Just FYI I have emailed AOPA-India to look into this matter because it is high time that DGCA looks into the regulations. India looses pilots to other countries bcoz of dumb rules.

i am sure you must be a pilot. I suggest you email them regarding same issue. The more we let them know about our concerns the more they can gain support and pressurize DGCA to make reforms.

I am planning to write a petition on change dot org. If i have enough support I we can take this matter forward.

I would definitely write an email , would support any such movement , but to be honest , I'm just sick and tiered of these DGCA dumb-nuts , have been fighting with them for last 4 years , and the only thing i have learnt is , no matter how much we shout scream our lungs out for anti corruption and cleaning up the society and changing the ideas , it just doesn't seem to work in this govt. office !!! only thing that works is Mr.Gandhi !!!

There are so many such rules which if asked to DGCA they have no clue on why they are there in the first place , but still they are there .

I feel sad when your passion for flying is being evaluated by an Ass who thinks hes a god's gift to Aviation.

Anyways more and more cribbing stories like mine float around DGCA everyday, but in the end all that matters is to keep up your passion . Don't let it become a victim of a disease called DGCA !

This is the petition on change.org

Pardon me for any granmar mistakes. I am not a writer. It's for everyone not just for Indian pilots. Opening up the system could bring oppturnities for expats as well.

I will make a new thread for this petition on PPRUNE.

Devil Maths and Physics for 11th and 12 class

How long will it take for a non- science student to complete the syllabus for both subjects and for both years ????.Obviously an aspirant cannot spend two years to complete the whole syllabus like a normal school student would do.But,I how much time should be given to both subjects before giving the NIOS exam. Can anyone help?????

@APS17

DGCA does not care for 11th . They only care for 10th and 12th

In 10th they want Maths and Science as subjects

In 12th they want to see Maths and Physics as subjects . You need to learn just enough to pass these papers ( which I believe is around 33% or 35% could be higher depending on which board you go to )
But you should have passed 12th overall ( not just passed in Maths and Physics alone )

How long it takes to study varies from person to person and the teacher teaching you . If you can score above 55% in Maths and Physics and English then you will be eligible for IndiGo Cadet Pilot Program and the IGRUA entrance as well

Is Commerce Maths valid for CPL in India?

I am from a commerce stream and I had mathematics in my class 12. So, can I just take the physics exam from NIOS or I will have to take mathematics as well?
