CX vs KA. Package difference.

I have started a new topic following a question that I answered with regards to difference of CX and KA packages should you join either one of these company as a Cadet.

CX

There are 2 main differences between the Expatriate and Local contract is the Housing Allowance and Child Education Allowance.

Cadet pilots will receive a Hong Kong Pilots Allowance which is a cash allowance, its amount dependant of rank.*

Cadet pilots are only entitled to having the children's school fees reimbursed if they are attending schools in Hong Kong.

Apart from ancillary expatriation items, Leave entitlement, Provident Fund contribution are the same.

KA

Expatriate and Local contracts are vastly different. *Leave entitlement is less for a Cadet Entry Pilot. *

Expatriates receive a cash gratuity whilst Cadet receive a Provident fund contribution starting with a lower employer contribution percentage than the gratuity scheme.

When comparing a CX and KA cadet, a KA cadet will
not receive:

1. Hong Kong Pilot Allowance, but instead a Special Allowance which is inferior.

2. *No forgivable loan.

3. *No Child Education Allowance.

Coupled with the fact there is no aircraft orders in KA and no expansion since KA became a wholly owned subsidiary of CX, you will need to carefully consider the 2, should you be put in a position to choose.

On the other hand, in KA you have a real aircraft rating from the start and not a P2X rating as an SO which you will hold for about four years in CX. Hours logged in the P2X column of your logbook don't count for anything if you decided you want to leave and find employment elsewhere. But the next two KA cadet courses are for MPL licenses which can only be used for employment in KA.

Until, that is, they amass the aeronautical experience for an ATPL. Then, it's an ATPL - just like yours & mine.

yeah thats not actually much difference between CX and KA as far as the licence and type rating goes.
In CX you have a CPL and a P2X rating which is not recognized anywhere else, it will take you 4-5 years as an SO before your upgrade and you get a marketable P1 rating.
In KA you have the MPL until you meet the hours requirements for a CPL or MPL, this will take a similar time frame.
Frankly if you're a HKG local it really doesn't make much difference which licence route you go down, however if you're an expat looking for a quick type rating and stepping stone, you need to consider your options carefully.

I think you will find there is a big difference for the cadets in the first 4 years. Most importantly, after 4 years the KA cadet will be a Senior FO with the appropriate pay for the rank and will have accumulated enough P1 hours for his ATPL. The CX cadet with 4-5 years of SO on the jump seat will be playing catch up for a long time - he will need to do the appropriate number of P1 hours after his SO time before his ATPL can be validated and it will be a further number of years before his basic salary matches the KA cadet's.

Therefore, time scales not the same and remuneration definitely not the same.

Right, but let's not lose sight of the fact that year 1 FO pay at CX is higher than top tier KA SFO pay.

The way things are going, KA command time won't be more than a year or two inside CX's.

Time value of money. The pay difference can be reduced if invested properly...

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't the KA scheme open exclusively to HKG locals anyway (well, HKID card holders)?

I'm not sure what relevance that has on the package difference...?

It's like saying being a US regional will afford you the same lifestyle as an Air France skipper - if you come from a wealthy family..
