Wing Flex,

It is also possible for wives + family to move to Adelaide and live near the campus. I have heard of several cadets who went through the program like this. This way, you'll be able to see your family often (i.e. dinners, weekends...etc etc)

Yes, I don't see any problems with that. The move and setting up of your family will be at your expense. I'm only aware of one guy in the past that did something like that. He lived with his girlfriend near the city as she was also studying in SA and drove out to Parafield for flights and classes. Not sure if he did this for the whole course though.

It's not the best area around the campus but you should be able to find a reasonable house to rent for a decent price. The suburbs closer the the city would be another option but it would require a 15-30 min drive and of course... more expense.

During the winter, weather can play havoc with training flights causing many disruptions, cancellations and it may become annoying driving backwards and forwards compared to just living across the road. Food for thought.
