Grateful for some advice from trained pilots (preferably)

OK - I'll try to keep this short and I would like blunt, honest answers if possible. I am 28 years old who is currently studying for a Masters Degree. All my qualifications are not related to aviation in anyway but I do believe I am quite qualified - different certificates, diploma, degree and hopefully soon to be master's. I have had some friends and family in the aviation industry. When I was 25 I did a PPL for a bit but because I was about to get married could not finish it. Sod's Law, ended up breaking up with the woman and had to work to pay the bills so no chance. Now, what I'm thinking is (if I have enough money) when I'm 30 and finished master's, starting The PPL again and try my best to get into CXCP. Would I have any chance in hell of getting in as it is obvious I have not had a passion to fly all my life? It seems to me that the ones accepted for the cadet program are obsessed with aviation i.e. it is their life. I am not of this category but it does interest me. Aviation is a really hard industry to get into and is it going to be really worth the effort in my situation? Some advice would be so appreciated as it might put my mind to ease.

Its worth a shot and you always will have your master's if it doesn't work out which is great. One thing though, from my experience, if you aren't into it 110% during training, etc, it won't happen. Sooooo, make sure you really are up to the challenge.

Well you have got one woman out of the way, try not to get another one until after your provident fund is in a Swiss bank. As far as the CXCP goes , if you like fear and loathing in HKG. CX is the place for you.
Go ahead and make somebody's day !

H&S,

If you asking whether you are too old to be taken in as a cadet, I remember someone in his early 30s said he got in a few years ago, but as you can imagine an airline probably would prefer someone a little bit younger, so they can get a few years of service out of him/her (for the feminists).

If I could be truly frank and honest, you have to be very committed to get in. Just think about how many people you are competing against. So, half measure won't cut it. Your non-aviation qualification doesn't matter either. In fact, there are youngsters got in with just A-Levels. So in my humble opinion, what they are looking for is the right type of personality and capability with enthusiasm.

I would say, by all means, have a crack at it (but with everything you have got). You don't loose any beans over it!

I hope it goes well for you.

Fear and Loathing

Major-Domo. Are you , or have you ever been, employed by CX? If you are, I am sure your "fear and loathing" could be relieved by terminating your employment and finding another employer to whinge about. I'm sure both you and CX would benefit from your moving on.

Well, let me put is this way. CX is not a very "touchy feely" outfit, when it comes to training in general. Depending on your personality, that may be an advantage or a disadvantage.

You are expected to do your homework, but you get plenty of resources to prepare yourself for the task at hand. At the end of the day, you are expected to perform to what is considered a high standard.

Some of the perception from the "outside" , led me to initially believe, that there is "a no training just checking" culture in CX. While in some cases that may be true, my experience was actually quite the opposite. IMHO the training is quite good.

The relatively recent changes in the training department and flight ops have certainly contributed to this positive development. I found that the trainers and checkers were pragmatic and likeable individuals.

The overall operation is very good and efficient and generally performs like a well oiled machinery.

On another note and it is a bit of an oxymoron:

Do not base your opinion from blogs like this one, as the views here have naturally a strong bias......just find out for yourself

Hope this helps...

Hi There,

I believe the phrase "whenever there is a will there is a way", And I remember that word came form my (then) 33 year old CXCP friend -who has a bachelor degree in something totally unrelated to aviation- during our training in Adelaide. though I am not CXCP nor work for CX at the moment.

From what I heard from CXCP at that time, CX puts more emphasis on how enthusiastic you are to become a pilot, and to be part of CX great team as a pilot. I could be wrong, because Its not my own experience, but I Heard it form CXCP who obviously had gone through the CP selection process.

Hope this helps. All the very best shall you decide to proceed with the application.

Respectfully Yours.
