Driving a car in Hong Kong
Hallo,
How expensive will it be to own a car in Hong Kong. Licence fee for a year, Petrol price ? Do you get road tax or any other funny tax there ? Any link to a website selling second hand cars in Hong Kong to check prices. Found some on Gumtree but only 1 or 2.
Thanks

for second hand cars, try: [URL="http://www.automall.com.hk/eng/main.htm"]http://www.automall.com.hk/eng/main.htm
Euro cars more than about 5 years old are very reasonable compared with western countries.
fuel is around $15-16 HKD/litre at the moment.
There are also licence/registrations fees which are not cheap, though i can't help you on that as I do not own a car.
Unless you are planning to live in a more remote area, you don't "need" a car in HK, public transport here is brilliant and taxis are very cheap.

Second that. public transport in hong kong is AWESome. Apart from in the rush hour where the entire hong kong is fighting to get on the thing. In hong kong, the highest cost of owning a car is finding a place to park it. very expensive.

Road fees from www.gov.hk:
Private Car (petrol) 12 months
cylinder capacity:
(a) not exceeding 1,500 c.c. HK$3,929
(b) exceeding 1,500 c.c. but not exceeding 2,500 c.c. HK$5,794
(c) exceeding 2,500 c.c. but not exceeding 3,500 c.c. HK$7,664
(d) exceeding 3,500 c.c. but not exceeding 4,500 c.c. HK$9,534
(e) exceeding 4,500 c.c. HK$11,329
Parking:
in many apartment developments - can be something like US$200-300/mth
Bridge Tolls to Airport:
used to be US$4, but I think it's gone up now
Alternativley:
the longest journey to the airport by bus/train from major town, like Sai Kung, would cost max US$5.
Hope this helps,

Parking:
Roadside parking: $8 per hour
Most shopping mall will charge you $12-15 per hour, some may charge $20-30+ per hour
Monthly parking will normally cost $2000 - 3000, depending on where you live
Tolls:
Bridge tolls to airport: $30 (from airport to kln)
Other tolls (tunnel ... etc) : $8 - 30, more expensive from kln to hk island
========================================================
You can buy a car for a bargin in hk, however expect to pay big bucks for the ongoing cost.

Not worth the headache. Your driving time will be eclipsed by finding and paying for parking spaces, . . . and by walking from the parking space to where you really want to go, . . . because you won't be able to park anywhere near the front door, unless you own the sidewalk.
