Some hilarious posts here. Sharing an apartment!! LOL. What is this, an islander gig in PNG? I'd imagine as a 35 year old airline pilot the guy might reasonably expect enough to rent or buy his very own accomodation, like a proper grown up
No point moving your life to HK to scrape out a subsistence lifestyle.
The only reason to be here is to make lots of money by investing at a rate you couldn't match back home, and to get a fast career progression unavailable back home.
Lacking one or both of those reasons to be here, why would you be here??? Have a look at how many CX and KA are losing at the moment, on a substantially better package than Fedex HKG...

Where to stay? Anywhere, but I would suggest the Novotel in Tung Chung. Because on that housing allowance, that's where you will be living! Forget the Mid Levels or Discovery Bay.
What to see? Everything. You can't get bored here!

5.11fo,
Great thread - I was hoping someone would be addressing this on this forum!
Everyone please keep the responses coming!!!
As for "we'd be doing everyone a favor" (or "favour" for you "proper English speaking" folks) by not taking such a crappy deal, I wholeheartedly agree! The only problem is that they're only short about 40 bodies and have about 14,000 qualified applicants on file, so if those of us who are next in line don't take it I'm pretty sure somebody will!
Anyway, the only options we really have are:
1) Take HKG (or CDG, which I'd do in a heartbeat) and tough it out until you get the seniority to bid out of there.
2) Don't get hired by FedEx in the next 5 years.
I'm leaning toward option #1 while still keeping apps in with other airlines to keep the options open.
If I'd had the chance to vote on the FDA LOA I would have voted NO, but absent that option I think this is the best we can do.
Anywho ... please keep the knowledge flowing our direction! Thanks!

Here's another question that you guys over in HKG might be able to answer for me: Since FedEx is actually going to be flying out of Guangzou, why can't we just live there rather than taking a 3-hour bus ride each way? Is it a visa issue or something? I guess it might be a little more difficult (and would have to learn Cantonese!) but the COL would be so much lower, plus I don't like the idea of spending 6 hours on a bus each time I fly much either!!!
Inputs?

Update:
I'm a FedEx pilot that went straight to SFS as a new hire.
Just several days ago, I finally left SFS (base closing)
Did I leave SFS for HKG? Answer, NO. I left for ANC -11 FO. Reason being? I simply do not want to sacrifice my own financial well being for this company.
Our union force fed our pilot group a grossly substandard HKG package, and our not so bright pilot group voted Yes to it by a margin of 68%.
To further the point, I was exactly the "target demographic" the union/company claimed to be looking for when they fed us this sh i t sandwich. I'm 34, single, and no kids. And I clearly like Asia, as I've had a great time here the last 3 years. Yet, they still couldn't get ME to go. (so yes, to answer an above question, there are still multiple vacancies in the HKG FO slot).
22,000 HKG dollars as a housing "allowance", where you can't even pocket the change (if there were any) is simply a joke. No tax benefit for living and working outside the USA is a joke. No transportation allowance or assistance is a joke. No tuition assistance for your children (if you have any) is a joke.
If I am going to be subject to the above conditions, I may as well live and work in the US.
PS. To answer the other question, yes you can live anywhere within 100 nm radius of HKG airport and still collect the 22,000 HKG (2700 USD) allowance. We have pilots living in CAN, HKG, and Macaou right now.
