Starting in CX, what to expect??

hi there,

i will start training in cx sometime next year.
i have some questions about the first months. i read the post from dexydogg about adelaide, so i´m informed about that.

so do they ask you which aircraft type you would like to fly?

when you go to adelaide for 5 weeks, do you have the chance to go home afterwards?

how long is the sim training then before you start flying?

do you need to stay in hkg on your own expences from the first day of training? or do they give you some time to look for a appartement?

so you are 3 years or more flying as an SO, then JFO, for how long? and on which aircraft type? can you choose it?

is it correct that you need to stay in hkg as long as you are JFO?

when can you apply for an outport base? do you need to be FO or relief FO?
how long does it take to become relief FO?

so what´s about the temporary basings as an SO? i would like to see australia and sfo? is that possible? for sfo i need to bee on the 744?

Thank you for your help!

You can tell them and they will try to accomodate. A few of the 6 that inverviewed with me specifed a preference for the 744, and got it.

Possibly, but unlikely. I had a few days off at the end, but certainly not enough time to get to Canada and back. May work if home is in Aus.

>how long is the sim training before you start flying?

For training times, see this thread:

>do they give you some time to look for a appartement?

You can stay 6 months at the company hotel (company pays for the hotel). If you move out, you can get $HKD 14,000 allowance in cash (monthly), or up to 23,000 (based on the current HK real estate index) if you sign a lease or mortgage for a property. You are responsible for everything else once you're back in HK (like food, which is provided free in Adelaide).

I'll leave it to someone else to answer the other questions more accurately than I could at this stage.

If you have a prefernece for the 744, 777 (its now an option for SOs) or the Airbus, send an email to Kelly/Monica and let them know.

The company will make no promises but if courses are starting within a few weeks they may well give you the choice.

If you dont ask, you wont get!

Heres a short answer to your other questions but "big picture" dont sweat it! Things will (and do) change & once youre here in HK you will have a far greater handle on it all. Meantime....relax, go skiing!!

Upgrades: Generally (its in the companies best interest to upgrade you to the fleet youre familiar with....ie: youve got the best chance of completing the course sooner & thereby saving the company money) BUT....you can very much ask for a particular fleet to upgrade on.
What til youre here and then after 3yrs decide. The feelt routes & rosters are always changing.....3yrs in CX is a very long way away!

JFO rosters are 90% short haul, regional flying. Its near impossible to commute on a JFO roster....but, youre only a JFO for 8-9mths.

Temp basings require a minimum of 4 SOs agreeing to the same base over the same months (normally 2 months).
You will easily be able to get 2-3 temp basings in in your time as an SO (of you can find like minded explorers)
Dont sweat the fleets...things can and will change (eg: the A340 will be going back to SFO soon too). For Australia temp basings you need to be A340/A330 CCQ.
Lastly, think laterally. You could YVR temp base on the A340 and commute to SFO.....after all youre only flying 3 times per month.

I refer you to my earlier statement though....RELAX, take a load off; all will come in good time!

Remember at the end of the interview they said, 'do you have any questions?', you should have said yes.
