A380s for Cathay
Hi all!
A quote from wikipedia.org:
"...Cathay Pacific is considering to order new long-haul aircraft. Airbus is negotiationg with Cathay Pacific to order 6 to 10 A380s now. Expected to see the order in the second half of 2005."
Can anyone confirm/deny/correct?
Also, does anyone know exactly how many/what kind of aircraft are on firm orders as of now? So much conflicting data out there... Appreciate any help.
Spektor.

It’s “WRONG”. CX still doesn’t see the economics of the A380 and has instead asked for letters of interest from both Boeing and Airbus for B777-300ER’s and A340-600. We will probably know later this year the outcome of this tendering process. Deliveries will start 2008 and go through to 2012. For the time being CX isn’t in the market for the A380 period.

Taken from Bloomberg this morning:
Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., Asia's second-most profitable airline, said it may add the Airbus SAS A340-600 or Boeing Co.'s 777-300ER for long-haul flights as the company expands its fleet to meet rising travel demand.

I would say yes, in the future, definitely not in the coming few years. Since the A380 is delayed or having some problem in flight testing, I think Cathay would not be place billion of dollars of the A380 yet. And the Boeing 747 Advance is still a concept, so I think Cathay wouldn't place orders yet too.
777-300ERs and A340-600s both have quite the same range, capacity, and are nice planes! Really hope Cathay is going to order both :P

I guess CX's concern is not only on the technical issue of 380 but the future market capacity of the airline industry. 380 may be too big for the needs of CX. But personally, i want CX to buy some 380...
This case again reflects the never ending debate between Airbus and Boring on the issue of future airline market.
