hopes about cx
i would like to know a simple thing.....i'm a flight instructor, 28 years only 700 hours and 50 turboprop....i just sent a letter to cathay introducing myself...because it was my first objective to fly there.....without mentioning that my fiance lives there and she is chinese......so my question is.....was it worth to spend 8 dollars to send the letter? would they just read it and laugh? or do they appreciate somebody who has a stablished objective and is working towards that?? i was just wondering......

Someone correct me if I'm wrong please, but I believe to fly for CX, you first have to be rated in the aircraft you will fly. It sounds like you're a ways off from even securing your ATPL? An introductory letter probably wouldn't hurt you, but I don't think it would get you many points towards getting a slot at CX.

i think you are wrong...you dont need to be type rated in any aircraft whatsoever to fly for cx...of course having some jet time will help you...but all you need is to fit in the criteria they use for selection in terms of hours...........

thanks apollo
thanks buddy..but i think i placed a misconceptual post.....my point was not to send a letter and get a job with my hours....(believe me, i know more than anyone the cx insides) my fiance lives there....and i follow the company since 1998........but the point was to know...if they care about sombody that is working hard to get a job for them...regardless of the experienced achieved so far......if they "SEE" you as a possible candidate WHEN you get the hours....

Mate, you did the right thing. They will like to see you progress towards your career goal.
I sent my first application in when I had just 250 hours and it was sent back, but I kept on updating because they gave me a ref number which means it must be on file some where. For 4 years I kept updating and then out of the blue I got a call for an interview.
Your fiance situation won`t help you its your qualifications they are interested in, as I also mentioned that I lived in Asia thinking that it would help with my application for a job, but it wasn`t the case.
My advice, every 100 hours or 3 months whatever happens first, update them with your progress. Show them you are truly keen. Couple of ph calls here and there won`t hurt either,

thank you my friend your words made me feel good, now i know i'm not the only one that believes that commitment and hard work pay off someday.....so thank you..and yes i will keep updating every 2 months...i didnt receive anything from them yet.....because it's been 4 days since i mailed them...but i keep my fingers crossed..........question....so what happened with your interview??? and yes...you are right...i didnt mean to say that since my fiance is chinese...they will name me king of the world..... but i also know that when i marry her..i will get my hk residency..which in the event i could get hired...would be less problematic since they dont have to sponsor me.. anyway...thanks...the best for you!!!!

martin_cfi, sorry if my post sounded so negative! Not intended to be. When I first applied to cx I did not have all the required quals and was advised by letter that whilst they appreciated the interest in the company, they were not able to keep any information about me on file due to the data protection laws in HK. Only once the requirements are met and you have a PRN then you are "on file". It was interesting to read that this doesn't seem to have been applied in all cases and it certainly cannot hurt to send your stuff in. One thing is for sure that if you don't try, you will definately not be held on file. All the best buddy

Good one mate! Whatever you do, don't be put off by negative comment here. The fact is that clearly CX is where you want to be and whatever you do, keep reminding them of that! I'm sure that after all these years, they too are sick to the tits of negative pilots jumping down people's throats before they've given any thought to the question. From what I've read of your post (and thought about it) I'm pretty sure that sometime in the future, we can all look forward to your announcement that you've got what you're after. Go for it!

Martin/1269/Bogan.....
its so refreshing to see positive support for our up and commers. Im sick of seeing all the sledging that goes on in these pages. I felt really happy for you Martin after reading 126.9 and Bogans replies. This industry is hard enought to make it in without every tom dick and harry hassling you on the way. Your hours may not cut it yet but your great attitude can never be replaced by hours

Cathay Minimums
Hi there. Can anyone tell me if the minimum hours requirement for direct entry SO is still 1000 hours, or has it incresed to 3000 total time. I seem to be getting conflicting information.
Thanks,
RL

Rhumb Line 1000 hrs is still the min for CX.... BUT.... at the moment they are not interviewing anyone with under 3000TT and 1000 turbine. They have thousands of applications on file, so for the time being, thats what u will need.
Good luck
