Competitive edge for cadet program

Hello all, I'm a noob on this forum so please bare with me for awhile as I learn the unwritten rules of this forum.

Like many people, I too am interested in the CX cadet program. I already read the requirements and I think I meet all of them except that eye exam. (Still good to know that they will accept people wearing glasses).

I am wondering if a PPL would give me a competitive edge over other applicants. I already looked up a flying school in Vancouver, Canada (Montair Aviation to be exact and they say they got 3 graduates that is flying with CX thru the cadet program). Also, will they still ask you to conduct an eye exam if you have a current Cat. 1 medical cert.?

Also, do they conduct the interviews in English or Cantonese or both? My Chinese writing skills are close to zero after living in Canada for 12 years. However, I can still verbally communicate in Cantonese.

Thanks for your answers in advance.

Without doubt, demonstrating a personal commitment to aviation by getting a PPL - or even just some flying lessons, will give you a 'competitive edge' at the cadet selection.

Indeed, when making the final cut in the interviews they may well be prepared to overlook other shortcomings if you have shown you have a passion for flying and a willingness to make personal sacrifices (ie. the cost of a PPL).

CX get thousands of applications for the programme, but I suspect it's plagued by candidates who have a shot-gun approach to finding a career - ie have applied to the civil service, HSBC and other major employers without any clear vocation. It's these candidates who won't survive the sift. Having some flying time would mark you out as someone special. No guarantees of course. Just have lots of enthusiasm for flying, aeroplanes and all things aeronautical.

Interviews are in English - there is no Chinese requirement at all. Complete and relaxed fluency in English - with an ear for humour - are also vital qualities.

Good luck - and don't be put off by eyesight requirements- everyone worries too much about this. You'll know for sure when they do a screening medical at an early stage of the selection. Just go for it and good luck!

Thanks for your quick reply. I'm relieve that the interviews are not in Chinese. Also like to thank those who put together all those vital information on the cadet program. I was really considering getting corrective surgey done on my eyes. Now I know better. Again thank you very much guys.

Don't go into the interviews thinking you're competing against other candidates. The Company has consistently recruited less people than they would like because there just aren't enough who are suitable. All who apply are in this together and it would actually do you good, particularly in grading, if you help each other out. Good luck.

Katana, how's it going? Have you had your interview with R.H.?

Quite true Guru - in fact a co-operative spirit with other candidates will serve you well beyond selection and grading onto the actual cadet course in Adelaide. The course is simply too demanding to undertake without the support and teamwork of fellow cadets.

Especially if you're crap at algebra like I was!

True, you always learn more with other people. I don't mean competitive as in burrying other applicants, but more along the lines of making my application stand out. That's why I asked about the PPL.
