waiting but it's worth it...........

I was accepted at the start of August for D/E S/O pax fleet. At that time I was told that the start date would possibly be sometime at the start of 2004. Last month I was told that a revised start date would be approx. 12-14 months from now due to the increased Freighter expansion (because the first six months of 2004 are scheduled for all Freighter training.)

No matter, very little I can do about it and there are much worse positions to be in. Cathay is one of the best jobs out there, is where I wanted to go for my career (whatever some of the commentary in some of the threads here may say), and I am more than prepared to be very happy there come what may, delay or otherwise.

So happy waiting to anyone else, please post if you hear about S/O start dates.

Cheers,

pintail

All quiet on the home front.

Can anyone give any info on what is happening with the training schedule for 2004/2005.....relating to D/E S/O spots?

cheers.

Nike

Direct entry Second Officer?!?!?!?!

Seriously though mate, looking probably at March or April next year, but when the training starts, there will be a big influx and all those on yes letters will go pretty quick. At the moment there are no extendee captains (over 55yrs) and the rumour goes that CX cannot train enough at the bottom end to fill those captains who are leaving due to retirements.

pintail and nike, to give you a tiny insight into what you are up for... ask yourself this

How much Freighter training is done on the pax fleet?
(answer is very little, freighters are classic and -400, the pax -400 has enough trouble with recency and checks for their own crew to have to worry about training a significant number of freight guys. The majority of F/O training is on short haul trips. S/O's are trained only on long haul trips)

How about the Airbus fleet? No freight training going on there, why dont they put you on that?

The truth of it is a large number of freight guys excercised the 3 year option to come across to the pax fleet, so there is little or no need for S/O to F/O upgrades, meaning there is little or no need for S/O recruits.

Haven't even been to Adelaide, and they are lying to you already. Welcome to Cathay

Hi fellowmen,

Just got back from Hong Kong yesterday. On my way I passed by flight recruitment and according to Carol CX are only going to need a very few S/O next year (2004) (in these terms, my guess is like 5-10). So early 2005 would be her best guess. But she also said that ofcourse anything can happen.

Good luck to you all

Nosegear - D/E vs cadet, there are alot of posts refering to Cadetships etc at Cathay and I wasn't sure if there was some sort of differentiation between to two types when referencing start dates. Just trying to keep it simple.

Thank you for what info you all have passed.

Pintail, had the same thing in 99 and was put on ice for 10 months. My adive to you is-get a few more credit cards
-quit your job
-get a 6'6, 7'0, 7'4 all pintails of cause
-go and hang out in indo, mexico ,peru , south of france, pacific, where ever.
-wait for the call. You'll have your cards paid off within 6 months of joining cx and will have just had the best year of your life. I'm envious. By the way don't be surprised if you get the call sooner rather than later, company is currently setting load records and is keen on the second hand 400's.

Thanks The Looka,

I just might do that...........trying to hit the water as much as I can right now.....don't have to quit because my company laid me off when they found out that I had been accepted, so I have the time right now (but not the money). Had the money before but not the time..........will it always be so I wonder?

Looking for work, and surf right now, and I am fine with waiting. Airlines change their minds and plans all the time, sometimes back and forth, and when they want me they will I'm sure, let me know.

As for jtr asserting that CX has lied to me, I really don't think they have. I am aware and have been told the information that you 'provided', I have talked with Carol about what is happening - possibly I just didn't think it proper to post everything I have ever said or everything that has ever been said to me regarding my possible employment. Thanks for the cheery information though. It is nice to know that some people can be unhappy just about anywhere. I'm not one of them.

Sometimes pilots tend to think that they know every plan and idea going on at the management level, and many also tend to take everything personally. I don't. If Cathay needs pilots, and I do believe that they are an airline and they will, then they will hire pilots. Since they have gone to the trouble to interview me twice and have accepted me in writing, I assume (I think it is ok in this case to assume) that I will be one of the pilots that they choose to hire when that time comes, whenever it is. No conspiracy, no lying, no whatever.................Meanwhile, as a pilot of my age, experience, goals etc. - Cathay is worth waiting for. I don't have the experience with the kind of employer (soooo good) that would/will make CX seem to be a bad option.

Cheers,

pintail

Hey Guys,

I'm sitting on a YES letter as well. Did my final interview in September for SO. From what I understand, there are more courses being run than originally planned. From this forum and other sources, I have found that it looks like course are being run in January, March, May. If this is true, the pool will be dry in no time.

I was originally told not to expect anything until 2005, but hopefully this newest info means things will happen sooner.

Any info about the SO hiring would be greatly appreciated.
