Flew an NDB to EDDK not too long ago because the ILS was out and the operator at the time was not certified for GPS approaches... There are applications for it.

In the days of anything above ETOPS 120 this shouldn't be an issue - all the classic ETOPS alternates will have something more than an NDB approach. That said I still prefer to have one or better two...
