Either I'm misunderstanding your point or IMHO you've been misinformed - you certainly can get airside clearance as a UK citizen who has resided outside the UK for over 5 years...

It's not about being professional or even us being "clubby". We are required, as part of our job description to take control and Command of the aircraft - it happens on every flight, so screening us...
