Quite probable, but even if he had understood it seems he was pushy enough to carry on anyway - given the airfield owner's actions one would imagine the pilot had been clearly advised not to carry on...

55 KIAS was the proximated forward speed of the a/c, it was said to have "entered the dive at about 50 ft agl", there is no speed mentioned at impact.
