Whether he was consiously utilizing ground effect, who knows, but apparently the aircraft stalled about 10' above the ground. I wonder if this was what made the nose come down enough to avoid a tail...

Higher speed/weight would make no difference. They cancel eatch other out, so to speak, and the gliding distance would be the same.
