Have you considered the 300 or even the Guimbal Cabri, both are perfect trainers and cheaper than the R44 :ok:

Nose up, tail down would be my preferred option - try and use the tail as a crumple zone. This seems to be the "safest" way to me.
Landing on the canopy and keeping it there sounds almost impossible...
