Obviously in CTA, only the controller has to be bilingual, but how does it work away from controlled airspace? Do English pilots have to speak French and vice-versa?

Yes it is. Cargo only flights with properly loaded and sealed jerry cans. In the wet there is no other way to transport fuel. Mostly it is diesel.

With never going out of gliding range, it makes no sense that no mayday was heard....should have had time if he had got to 4500. Catastrophic failure sounds possible, but maybe there would be more...

I think there are 2 Ausar aircraft out, as well as 3 choppers. Stuff reported as found so far does not include broken bits of airframe, so there is hope!
