I think Peter we was correct that NATS is simply implementing a pre-determined course of action for such an event, but I doubt they imagined that the closure of controlleed airspace would continue...

The legal minimum to land assuming you are assured of a landing at destination is Fixed reserve which on NG is aprox 1100kg. After a long taxi you could easily burn 300kg thus arriving at the gate...
