Similar to the Goalkeeper fitted to the carriers ATM. I think the same system, the Phalanx, is fitted to the current type 42 destroyers. Might be wrong though.

According to one of my contacts ;) , the carriers failed the main gate test last Wednesday, so, yet again they are postponed/off/whatever. That did come from a reliable source.

I'll leave the squadron questions to someone genuinely in the know, but the difference between the GR7/GR7A and GR9/GR9A is.... the GR7A is the GR7, but with an upgrade from the Rolls Royce Pegasus...

I don't think there's too much of a worry about that: it's used in the back of airliners to balance the weight, because it is such a dense (yet cheap) element. It is only slightly radioactive.
