757 evac question.
 

Quick question thats arisen due to recent incidents.

I'm booked on a flight in row 33 on a 757. This is the rear of wing emergency exit row and I will be on the exit seat.

In the unlikely event of an Evac is there anyway, prior to opening the door to know if the engine is running or is it a case of the flightdeck not calling "Evacuate, Evacuate" until engines are shutdown?

The evacuation checklist has the engines shutdown before the Captain announces the evacuation over the PA. Other than noise, there's no real way to tell if the engines are running in this case (normal operations would have the anti-collission light switched off after engine shutdown but not in an emergency).

Check outside for signs of fire first, Burnie. No point throwing people out into an Engine/Brake/Fuel leak induced fire.

If you believe in luck it might be an idea to change your forum name to something less flammable prior to your flight.

The good news (risk wise) is that it is unlikely an engine will be running at takeoff power.

It has happened at idle power (self initiated evacuations) and I don't recall any engine related incidents.

I forget what happened in the Qantas A380 event.

The pax stayed on board until the fire crews managed to drown the engine.

Cabin crew may initiate the evacuation if things are really bad (catastrophic- fire etc) and they usually have a good idea regarding the engines.
As for doors 3 on the 757, crew are usually positioned here so it's probably not anything you need to think about.

Nice to know a passenger is thinking about this stuff prior to flying.. rather than giving it a cursory few seconds as they taxi out.... well done
