wake vortex film sought
I have heard that there is a stunning film clip of two F104 starfighters getting caught up in the wing tip vortex of a B58 Hustler
Can anyone tell me where I can trace this film, or indeed any other film clip which will help to illustrate wake vortex effects?
thanks

I have seen a NASA video of a 737 following a 747 at very close range to study wake effects. The 737 looked like a small metal boat caught up in the wake of a super tanker. It was literally getting tossed all over the place. They had smoke generators on the wings of the 747 so they could see the flow path.

Flaps - I cannot help with that, but there was a wing vortex fatal accident between a 104 and an XB-70 Valkyrie. There may be video, but the story is here and post- collision pictures of the damaged aircraft here. Further here on a memorial site which suggests that pre vortex flip the 104 had actually collided twice with the XB-70 wing.

I saw it last at BA flight training at braincrank (sorry cranebank) wasnt part of the course, just lying in the shelf sort of thing. I would have thought that boeing would be a good place to start. it was a of promo for the flight test department might be something on the web.

At the bottom of this page... http://www.ntsb.gov/events/usair427/images.htm is a pair of links to videos of...
It sounds like the tests mentioned by 747FOCAL above, no Starfighters though.
Hope this is of use.

The NTSB's Wake Vortex Flight Test, conducted at the FAA's Technical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey in September, 1995.

There is a film titled "Caution:Wake Turbulence" produced by FAA, I think (or else NASA) which shows testing done using smoke plumes etc. It's from the mid-1960s, and shows some age, but gets the point across. The testing is based on 707s landing and t/o at a field with smoke plumes over the runway, plus some inflight shots.
I have found several FSDOs and aviation libraries in the US that have it for loan, but nothing in the UK.

Saw the video HWEL mentions at Cranebank about 8 weeks ago. Great stuff, showing a 737 landing on grass and GRAVEL! Amazing.
Anyway, it is a big format video so wouldn't fit in your home VCR, but why not give them a call and ask if you can hire/borrow it, or if they have it on VHS. Worst case they can only say no. It is a bit old now and certainly a promotion of Boeing, but if you don't mind Technicolor (US spelling!) give it a try.
Otherwise, have a look on the NASA site, there are plenty of flight test pictures available and some videos as well I think. If not somewhere like Cranfield may have some in their library and they let people in for reference.
Cheers, J-R
NASA site has loads try this go to movies, search and try 'wake vortex' or similar. Came up with quite a few things for me.
