Firecrackers disrupt transatlantic flight to Detroit

A passenger on board a Northwest Airlines flight has reportedly set off firecrackers as it was arriving in the US city of Detroit.

A spokeswoman for the airline said some minor injuries were caused during the incident on the Airbus 330, which had flown from Amsterdam.

She said the passenger involved was "immediately subdued", AP reports.

FBI spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold told the BBC that the agency was on the scene investigating the incident.

Susan Elliott, spokeswoman for Delta Airlines - the parent company of Northwest - said 278 passengers were on board Flight 253 when the incident took place on Friday afternoon.

"Massive explosions shook the Airbus Jumbo jet as it dropped thousands of feet through the turbulent air, and the cabin filled with choking acrid fumes whilst the 400 passengers prayed to their maker ......."
