How many crews for 9 flight hour leg ?

If you leave your home base at mid night and flying for 9 to10 hours in a wide body two-man-crew aircraft without any rest facilities, you have to rest on passenger seat. How many flight crew do you use?

Depends on which part of the world you are in and under which Authority the airline operates. Generally speaking though, if you need inflight rest then you need another crew-member so that there will always be two at the controls.

Under our FTL (UK rules) if you had only 2 crew you would be restricted to 9:30 FDP, i.e. an 8:15 flight. If however you have 3 crew you do not need to factor the FDP for sectors as with only 2 crew and could do an 11 hour FDP with nobody needing rest so can then operate a flight up to 9:45. If we need to use in flight relief it would still only be 3 crew and if a pax seat is used that seat must be seperated and screened from the flight deck and pax (we can then go to 15hrs FDP).

Thanks! And with 2 crew 9 hours night flight, can you rest on seat? Or both pilots have to stay awake the entire period?
