smoking in the cabin???

flew back from belfast to liverpool 'the other day' on a low cost carrier.....

we were established in the climb and i suddenly notice the smell of burning...... after a millisecond of 'o we are in trouble' i recognised the smell as tobacco. Sure enough i looked round and sure enough one of the passengers is smoking a ciggie.

stewardess promptly pitches up and asks who is smoking. the fool ( a teenage male) tried to deny it was him. after being caught out by his hand burning and a pile of ash around him the stewardess then informed him that it is not permitted to smoke on an aircraft (she mentioned it twice during the safety brief).

fool said that he was not aware that he could not smoke on a plane.

as i remember i think smoking has been banned on flights for about 5 or more years now.

what is the penalty for committing such an offence?

i cant believe people still do it !!!! even i can manage the 30 minute flight without one.

Smoking itself is not illegal on UK airlines. However, if smoking is prohibited by the aircraft commander the failure to obey that prohibition could result in a fine not exceeding level four on the standard scale (£2,500 if I remember correctly).

If the smoking endangers the safety of the aircraft then up to five years in prison.

Hi Mutt

What else is banned in the cabin but permitted in the cockpit.

Mutt: I am no longer in Cairo, but hope to be back in your patch soon. At least the Jet Aviation window is safe again......

some people are so stupid. these is the regulations in Australia, from
Consultative Drafts of Subparts A-C of Proposed
Civil Aviation Safety Regulation (CASR) Part 91

91.465 Smoking in aircraft
(1) A person on board an aircraft must not smoke if the aircraft’s
pilot in command directs the person not to smoke, or directs the
aircraft’s passengers generally not to smoke.
Penalty: 25 penalty units.
(2) For subregulation (1), the pilot in command of an aircraft is
taken to have directed all the aircraft’s passengers not to smoke
if a ‘no smoking’ sign is displayed in the aircraft’s passenger
cabin.
(3) The operator of an aircraft in which it is not possible to see all
the passenger seats from the pilot in command’s duty station
must provide as many ‘no smoking’ signs, operable by the pilot
in command, as are necessary to warn when smoking is not
permitted.
Penalty: 10 penalty units.
(4) Strict liability applies to a contravention of subregulation (1) or
(3).

but i dont know how much a penalty unit is.
