I think you are just used to seeing the plane standing on struts and wheels ...the lower deck is not 'completely crushed', but it is not going to be intact now is it ?

It appears to be in a farm field. Seems strange to close the airport- Schiphol is so spread out that ops could have continued using other runways. This is what usually closes airports even if they do have more than one runway. |

The passenger account
One of the passengers interviewed currently on a news channel here in Turkey: he says that there was no warning or anything before the crash; they were getting ready to land when it happened, he says that it felt as if they entered a strong turbulence area...and then all of a sudden they hit the ground ...

Even though it is a huge airport, any event like this happening would necessitate a full turnout from the Airport Fire Service and that in turn would mean no further air traffic movements due to a lack of fire cover.

It's painful on here too but cmon...there is a relatively small amount of speculation on here compared to the likes of SKY and CNN. This chat is all pretty irrelevant anyway, wouldn't you say? |
Location of Crash
Having worked in the town of Hoofddorp for a long while, it looks like this was approaching the Polderbaan, Amsterdam Schiphol’s runway that is way off from the rest of the airport. If that map is correct it crashed on approach short of the aerodrome, let alone the runway. It seems to me that the crash did not take place at Schiphol at all, but took place outside the airport’s boundary - if that map’s correct.

Eyewitness in here reported a/c on the approach being low and suddenly pitching up and after that pitching down and basically plunging from the sky into the field.
Passenger reported felt like being hit by strong turbulence. Anyone info on the a/c type ahead, from experience, AMS in known for keeping separation down to the very bare minimum. Often one has to increase separation due to wake turbulence. |

<does anyone know if the Turkish was following a Heavy ie B75, or simmilar on approach?, I am thinking of wing Vortech.

Anyone know what the runway number was and what the spot wind was at the time of landing? Just concerned about the authorities attitude towards sound and the runway in use and the required max tailwinds etc??

Eyewitnesses report "lots of open bone fractures", "one body bag". But witnesses also say that around the broken off and 180-degree turned tail section "there are still a dozen bodies lying around."
Reports are also that most part of the plane seems to be lying with the nose away from the runway it was supposed to land on. Which is highly remarkable, given the relatively small distance to the runway. |
Runway 18R (locally known as 'Polderbaan'), wind was around 210 degrees at 10 knots.

i can see why the crew didn't blow the slides!! if they had it would have taken longer to get the passengers out as the door is too close to the ground.
