Sadly the story is true.

It may be true, but my redundant EK friends cannot confirm it. Then again we all know the UAE government will go to extreme lengths to conceal anything that may tarnish their image of being the perfect spot on earth. They UAE papers calls it fake news, but I doubt the definition of free press in Europe can be applied for the UAE press. If you are sacked in the UAE and have debt, you may end up in prison, (unless they have changed their system) and that may easily cause people to make desperate choices......... Sad.

Not sure what world you live in devon_guy. I don't think it is done with any pleasure. Furthermore, it has to be in writing for clarity and legal reasons. Stepping into the office for a "terribly sorry old boy but...." won't change a thing.

You could have a face to face and hand over the letter, but one would imagine that the redundancy [sic] of Human Resources these days, the expectant fisty cuffs would not be a welcome addition to the situation.

I would ask, did HR not hold any face to face meetings?

I understood that they had a five minute meeting with managers or should have if it could gone ahead.

Its obviously very painful to lose so much and one can only try and understand the pain that many are having right at this moment. I cannot express my sincere thoughts to all of our colleagues who are facing redundancy or similar. You guys and gals are not alone and all aviation people I am sure, offer their thoughts at this time.

i wouldn't castigate line management for such a letter as it's a legal obligation.

It's not the lack of a face-to-face announcement that I find upsetting and disrespectful. I have been made redundant twice in my life; both times, the bad news arrived by email. Under the circumstances, combining a large number of redundancies in a single day and the necessity for social distancing, this way of communication is not inappropriate in itself.

What I find truly miserable and offensive about the letter is that it's written in a purely bureaucratic language, devoid of any sign of compassion or gratitude. Phrases like "please accept our deepest apologies for this difficult decision" or "on behalf of the company, thank you for your time and efforts working with us" go a long way in such a situation, even if whoever's writing them doesn't actually mean it. Being so lacking in simple human kindness and common courtesy on such a sensitive subject just adds insult to injury and makes the already terrible situation even worse.

My deepest sympathy for everyone who lost their job. I hope that you will soon find a good alternative and be happy and fulfilled somewhere where you will be treated as a living person and a valuable professional rather than just as another asset.

You’ve actually hit quite a resonant bone with that one. I too, have two “R” notches on my resume ( retired so it’s not as important now ), but it was the making of me. “For every negative, there is a positive” couldn’t be more true. I, as others have intimidated, hope the country nay world, can garner some new and exciting opportunities from this terrible event. Probably a poor example, but music needed punk to kick in in the right direction.

To be fair, there is one, small line alluding to that at the end of the second page.

It was face to face for 2 mins with no explanation as to how individuals were selected . If asked " there was a very involved matrix " . unfortunately the sucides are also real !

For those who been made redundant I would focus on exit procedures. Specifically how and when you will get your end of service benefit ESB and make plans on your return flights. Will the airline honour the ESB ? Do they have the finances.? Get your thoughts on the cargo transport home see my thread on Transport company scams.

My advice to those leaving is sell everything it will be so much easier and get the transport allowance but I doubt the company will fork out any more money.

oh and one more thing , as Colombo would say, These multiple waves of people redundancies is set to continue so get ahead. Feeel for the family guys as it will hit them at same time as school term begins in autumn After disruption of the covid.

I would be concerned with the safety of flights Being conducted Now in view of the Recent stories about suicides. Will crewing take the effected people off the rosters immediately or continue to allow them to fly till end of notice period.?

After episodes like FedEx 705 and EgyptAir 990 most airlines will remove a pilot who is terminated or facing a serious disciplinary hearing from the schedule in my observation. On the other hand, expat contracts often expire without renewal and furloughs are part of the business. In these cases pilots normally fly right up to the end hoping to maintain currency before they hit the streets.

The issue here isn't the redundancies, but the way it was done. Of course, the fact that it was selective, for whatever reason they dreamed up, without explanation.

If the cull was made in seniority, then that's fair enough. Tough. But at least you know where you stand.

But this crazy method puts the fear of god into everyone, forever, intentionally. And safety is now permanently affected at Emirates. I will never fly with them again. The captain's fuel decision, has been affected by this cull. Forget it. Emirates is dead to me. Join the club, with PIA.

So currently, it’s 300 pilots and 7,000 cabin crew ? All foreign residential arrangements cancelled ?

More like 780 pilots, possibly more to come. 180 in training and on probation, 600 from the line.

It is a tragedy, particularly for those who are not protected by a " social net ". Not everybody will be welcomed back home, it is like a missing person suddenly turning up, when spouses have entered into a ( secret ) partnership. God be with them.
