Dash-8 is one of the few commercial aircraft where you can see the wheels from inside the cabin.

I was in a Dash-8 operating in Africa the other day with a great view of the wheels. On landing blue/grey smoke poured out of the wheels, I presume leaking hydraulic fluid heated by the brakes, and I could clearly see what looked like a locking collar rattling around loose on one of the hydraulic pipes.

Sometimes best not to see this stuff

John Nance is a very respected pilot and author, and I bet he's really cringing at having his name (and reputation) associated with the above ABC News screw up. Ah well, it's just the U.S. news media ... par for the course.

It seems the passenger was videoing the problem while they were taxiing to the runway prior to the takeoff.

If so instead of continuing the video, why did he not say something to a crew member or at least have his friend shout out to the F/A that we think there is a problem with the wheel?

Because was afraid the flight attendant would spit in his drink once they reached cruise altitude? :ouch:
