Shots fired at LAX

Not much firm detail but seems emergency response in full swing and terminal evacuated.

Official LAX statement says incident started at 09:30 at Terminal 3.

TV news shows people being evacuated onto the apron.
Seems to be fairly calm as can be. Some injuries reported, but no explanation as to what actually happened.

TMZ:
A gunman reportedly just opened fire inside a terminal at LAX -- and "Mythbusters" stars Grant Imahara and Tory Belleci were in the danger zone.

The shooting reportedly occurred around 9:30 AM in Terminal 3. According to reports, a TSA agent was shot at a checkpoint. The suspect was reportedly shot by police and taken into custody.

So far, no reports of other victims.

People inside the terminal were evacuated onto the tarmac -- including Belleci and Imahara -- and Belleci tweeted a photo of the mayhem.

He writes, "Shooters in #LAX That was  terrifying! ... Heard gun shots then everyone starting running for the door." Belleci says he and others now being shuttled away from the terminal.

Imahara tweeted, "I was in the Virgin lounge upstairs. Saw everyone pour out of the terminal onto the tarmac. Then I heard shots fired outside ... Virgin promptly locked the lounge doors. About ten minutes later, LAPD armed with automatic weapons arrived to secure the area."

Story developing..

Jeezzz...

Jeezzz...

Yeah, seems like a bit of overkill. I don't know if cargo and/or corporate flight operations are still allowed to operate, as they are no where near the airline terminal complex.

All streets to LAX have been closed including all the exits off of the 405 Freeway near LAX. Talk about a traffic jam. It will take hours, if not until tomorrow for things to return to normal.

Shooter it is now being reported, was shot by police in the terminal, was wounded and taken into custody. Via NBC News.

Now live shots of the LAX complex shows aircraft taxing to the runways, taking off and aircraft taxing to the terminal complex. So there are some operations ongoing.

According to the Tw*tter feed for LAX, arriving flights are being allowed to land. Everything else is being held.

So after evacuating the passengers onto the ramp area, how on earth do they "re-sterilize" the area from a security point of view? Or FOD for that matter?

They will, actually are at this point, be bused to a secure area and re screened, then allowed to go back to the terminals or leave. A FOD check will be performed by the ground personnel of the affected airlines. As for securing the area on the ramp where they were, the airport police and TSA agents will do that after all the civilians have left. This is SOP.

So for flights from Terminal Two and Three will be delayed for quite a while.

So, let's summarize this incident.

A single shooter fires at a TSA agent (did the TSA agent squeeze granny's boobs in front of the shooter perhaps?), the cops arrive, shoot the shooter and then take him into custody.

Whilst this is all unfolding, hordes of cops arrive - some toting automatic weapons. A ground stop is initiated at LAX, passengers are wisked away and the roads to and from LAX are blocked.

I wonder what the response would be if an armed squad of Taliban showed up?
Destroyers off the west coast? The 1st Armored division deployed? An air assault by the entire 82nd airborne division?

Talk about overkill and insanity. Geez. I think our country (U.S.) is in serious need of a couple of doses of a chill pill.

I personally experienced an overkill situation at EWR years before 911 and laughed it off as, "only in America". Yep, overkill is still alive and well in the USA. However, if it's any comfort to you, the Brits are now just as bad!

ORD view

747-big top just glided on, approximately 14:07 CST. Airside looks normal. Now, as to overkill, let's just please recall before calling it "overkill" that the recitation of facts ex post does little to explain the decision-makers' information set as the first reports came in. How could the command authority or authorities know whether another shooter might be lurking? Or even if the shooting was a diversion for some larger assault or attack? Mild condescension set forth as utterances of "overkill" are mild indeed when stacked up against what the community would be saying if the response proved inadequate (let alone, woefully inadequate) to such plausible scenarios or other highly threatening situations.

They have to react assuming the worst case scenario is about to happen. Maybe the shooter was just a distraction while somebody else brought a bomb into the terminal? Maybe there was a car bomb on the way, maybe there was 100 other scumbags about to open fire in there? Sadly this is the world we live in now

baggersup 1st Nov 2013 19:27

Am really going to stick my neck out here.

This may be a "domestic."

Reports say he shot and killed one TSA person.

If he wanted to do a mass shooting scenario, he had the rifle and the time, as he was shooting his way from the pre-security area to the post-security area.

This just feels like a domestic writ large. Victim might be either the ex-wife. Wife who's leaving. Or boyfriend of ex-wife. Etc. One person dead at the security checkpoint.

Unless an armed officer who just happened to be there and had to be taken out of commission, then it probably was an unarmed TSA officer targeted?

Something about it..............

Reports are now suggesting the shooter is/was a TSA employee.

If this was a "reality" show, no one would believe it:mad:

Reports are now suggesting the shooter is/was a TSA employee.

On UK radio, one interview with a pax in the area said he was asked " Are you a TSA employee ?" as he looked down the barrel.

This would seem to possibly support the TSA link
