Shots fired at LAX

Not much firm detail but seems emergency response in full swing and terminal evacuated.

Official LAX statement says incident started at 09:30 at Terminal 3.

jackieofalltrades 1st Nov 2013 17:01

TV news shows people being evacuated onto the apron.
Seems to be fairly calm as can be. Some injuries reported, but no explanation as to what actually happened.

NBC just announced all flights canceled LAX by order of FAA.

TMZ:
A gunman reportedly just opened fire inside a terminal at LAX -- and "Mythbusters" stars Grant Imahara and Tory Belleci were in the danger zone.

The shooting reportedly occurred around 9:30 AM in Terminal 3. According to reports, a TSA agent was shot at a checkpoint. The suspect was reportedly shot by police and taken into custody.

So far, no reports of other victims.

People inside the terminal were evacuated onto the tarmac -- including Belleci and Imahara -- and Belleci tweeted a photo of the mayhem.

He writes, "Shooters in #LAX That was  terrifying! ... Heard gun shots then everyone starting running for the door." Belleci says he and others now being shuttled away from the terminal.

Imahara tweeted, "I was in the Virgin lounge upstairs. Saw everyone pour out of the terminal onto the tarmac. Then I heard shots fired outside ... Virgin promptly locked the lounge doors. About ten minutes later, LAPD armed with automatic weapons arrived to secure the area."

Story developing..

Jeezzz...

con-pilot 1st Nov 2013 17:41

Jeezzz...

Yeah, seems like a bit of overkill. I don't know if cargo and/or corporate flight operations are still allowed to operate, as they are no where near the airline terminal complex.

All streets to LAX have been closed including all the exits off of the 405 Freeway near LAX. Talk about a traffic jam. It will take hours, if not until tomorrow for things to return to normal.

Shooter it is now being reported, was shot by police in the terminal, was wounded and taken into custody. Via NBC News.

Now live shots of the LAX complex shows aircraft taxing to the runways, taking off and aircraft taxing to the terminal complex. So there are some operations ongoing.

Noxegon 1st Nov 2013 17:48

According to the Tw*tter feed for LAX, arriving flights are being allowed to land. Everything else is being held.

YRP 1st Nov 2013 18:18

So after evacuating the passengers onto the ramp area, how on earth do they "re-sterilize" the area from a security point of view? Or FOD for that matter?

con-pilot 1st Nov 2013 18:27

So after evacuating the passengers onto the ramp area, how on earth do they "re-sterilize" the area from a security point of view? Or FOD for that matter?
They will, actually are at this point, be bused to a secure area and re screened, then allowed to go back to the terminals or leave. A FOD check will be performed by the ground personnel of the affected airlines. As for securing the area on the ramp where they were, the airport police and TSA agents will do that after all the civilians have left. This is SOP.

So for flights from Terminal Two and Three will be delayed for quite a while.

rgbrock1 1st Nov 2013 18:39

So, let's summarize this incident.

A single shooter fires at a TSA agent (did the TSA agent squeeze granny's boobs in front of the shooter perhaps?), the cops arrive, shoot the shooter and then take him into custody.

Whilst this is all unfolding, hordes of cops arrive - some toting automatic weapons. A ground stop is initiated at LAX, passengers are wisked away and the roads to and from LAX are blocked.

I wonder what the response would be if an armed squad of Taliban showed up?
Destroyers off the west coast? The 1st Armored division deployed? An air assault by the entire 82nd airborne division?

Talk about overkill and insanity. Geez. I think our country (U.S.) is in serious need of a couple of doses of a chill pill.

I personally experienced an overkill situation at EWR years before 911 and laughed it off as, "only in America". Yep, overkill is still alive and well in the USA. However, if it's any comfort to you, the Brits are now just as bad!

ORD view

747-big top just glided on, approximately 14:07 CST. Airside looks normal. Now, as to overkill, let's just please recall before calling it "overkill" that the recitation of facts ex post does little to explain the decision-makers' information set as the first reports came in. How could the command authority or authorities know whether another shooter might be lurking? Or even if the shooting was a diversion for some larger assault or attack? Mild condescension set forth as utterances of "overkill" are mild indeed when stacked up against what the community would be saying if the response proved inadequate (let alone, woefully inadequate) to such plausible scenarios or other highly threatening situations.

Una Due Tfc 1st Nov 2013 19:23

They have to react assuming the worst case scenario is about to happen. Maybe the shooter was just a distraction while somebody else brought a bomb into the terminal? Maybe there was a car bomb on the way, maybe there was 100 other scumbags about to open fire in there? Sadly this is the world we live in now

baggersup 1st Nov 2013 19:27

Am really going to stick my neck out here.

This may be a "domestic."

Reports say he shot and killed one TSA person.

If he wanted to do a mass shooting scenario, he had the rifle and the time, as he was shooting his way from the pre-security area to the post-security area.

This just feels like a domestic writ large. Victim might be either the ex-wife. Wife who's leaving. Or boyfriend of ex-wife. Etc. One person dead at the security checkpoint.

Unless an armed officer who just happened to be there and had to be taken out of commission, then it probably was an unarmed TSA officer targeted?

Something about it..............

Reports are now suggesting the shooter is/was a TSA employee.

beamender99 1st Nov 2013 19:51

Reports are now suggesting the shooter is/was a TSA employee.

On UK radio, one interview with a pax in the area said he was asked " Are you a TSA employee ?" as he looked down the barrel.

This would seem to possibly support the TSA link

aterpster 1st Nov 2013 21:18

The U.S. became a police state after 911.

Even the local cops have become over-reactive and jack boot thugs where I live half way between LAX and SAN.

deefer dog 1st Nov 2013 21:28

Another incident of this nature in a country vastly overpopulated with gun toters!

Now one thousand cops, rangers, sherrifs, deputies, bailiffs, marshalls, Feds, and a multitude of badge wearers issued with a blue lites on their car will form an orderly line of traffic and race to the scene.......in an attempt to create the illusion of being useful!

Standby for an overreaction on a colossal scale that only those in the USA are capable of organising.

con-pilot 1st Nov 2013 21:36

The guy is a TSA agent, no one was killed, seven people, including the suspect, were injured.

Incorrect - TSA employee dead.

""I am deeply saddened to inform you that a TSA employee was shot and killed today on duty at Los Angeles International Airport," said TSA administrator John Pistole in a message to employees. "Other TSA employees also were injured in the shooting."

"The gunman is in custody and we are working with local law enforcement to help insure the safety of our employees," he said."

fdcg27 2nd Nov 2013 00:06

I think you're onto something.
Maybe not a straight domestic, but maybe a guy with some head problems and a weapon?
Why did he think he had a mortal grudge with TSA?
There are some claims that he was a TSA employee, which I can't substantiate. Maybe he applied for TSA and failed the screening?
He clearly appears to have targeted TSA staff, so there may well be a personal motive.
Who knows? I'll bet we'll find out, though.
Boarderline crazies are out there and most of us have worked with or around one of them. I had one such boarderline guy hired to work under me. He was hired by my superior without my input. I desperately wanted to get rid of him, since I had figured him out as a real problem child. Fortunately, he got rid of himself by sucker punching another new hire at our training academy. He actually called another person who reported to me afterward and made personal threats involving me. I told her that if he ever called again, she should transfer the call to me, or that she could just tell him to grow a pair and threaten me to my face, maybe not my wisest move. Combine a boarderline personality with a sense of grievance and a weapon and you can have a really bad day.
The local authorities responded appropriately based upon the limited information they had.
We've had awful events involving hijacked aircraft in this country and we've had terrible mass shooting events.
The authorities reacted with both in mind even though that reaction turned out to be overkill in this instance.

westhawk 2nd Nov 2013 00:47

The local KABC TV news seems to be painting the incident as a lone gunman with a death wish scenario. They report that a "note" was found which "indicates" that the gunman "expected to die" and had an "anti-government bent". An "AR-15 type" rifle was reportedly used by the shooter and images shown on the news show a rifle laying on the floor of the terminal. Airport cops stationed in the area reportedly responded "immediately" and shot the subject before taking him into custody. The subject is reportedly hospitalized in critical condition at UCLA hospital. 1 TSA agent dead with multiple GSWs to the abdomen and more injured, though none critically.

A media briefing with the Mayor, the FBI, airport and LAPD chiefs was held at about 16:00 PDT and terminals 1 and 2 were re-opened shortly thereafter. Terminal 3 is closed until further notice. At least 6 News choppers were seen hovering just south of the airport from shortly after the shooting and a few are still there as of this moment. Traffic in the communities surrounding the airport is in gridlock and has been for hours. It took me a little longer to get home from work but that's just life when you live next to LAX.

I'm sure of just one thing: This story will last several news cycles. The President is reportedly going to comment publicly on it.

grounded27 2nd Nov 2013 05:23

Going "Postal" on the TSA was bound to happen in this country. One sick person aiming his frustrations at the group of people instituted to protect this country's airports (they are far from trained curious professionals) from many experiences. You have to keep in mind the drastic police state mentality that has has changed over the last decade+. The large divide politically. Out of 330m people, one suicidal person focused his anger. Has nothing to do with firearm law, the politicians and media will twist and turn this to the extreme.

ExXB 2nd Nov 2013 11:06

According to Slate’s gun-death tracker, an estimated 10,064 people have died as a result of gun violence in America since the Newtown massacre on December 14, 2012.
This doesn't include suicides (where someone else isn't killed)

Town centre closed of last Saturday because of a ruksack in a litter bin. Controlled explosion, nothing nasty found.

But ... rumours of other "interesting" things happening at the same time. Over-reaction? Dry run? Testing the response?

Experienced that once whilst on a Job in South Beach Miami. More cops, vehicles and flashing light than I ever seen, even in a movie !!

Turned out some black guy had nicked a pushbike from behind a deli and they were apprehending him :ugh:

When the call goes out, they just cannot resist getting involved !!

BOAC 2nd Nov 2013 13:46

While I deplore any unnecessary injury or loss of life, I feel this would have been more understandable had it been a crew member turning the gun on the TSA.

Spooky 2 2nd Nov 2013 14:44

Just another case of a country overpopulated with crazies and guns. Damn lucky this guy didn't kill another twenty before he was brought down.

Con Pilot, don't know where you got a connection between this guy and the TSA, but I don't think he ever worked for the TSA?

The once great USA is slowly, no maybe rapidly descending into a third world carnival. Kind of pathetic.

The once great USA is slowly, no maybe rapidly descending into a third world carnival. Kind of pathetic.
All great nations/civilizations have and will fail. Have a look at homicide rates per capita. Certainly quality of life and social services are more substantial factors. The USA has some of the most liberal gun laws of any country, it is impossible to relate them to the level of violence. The gun laws written into the constitution of the USA are there to prevent oppression, the same oppression most people escape when immigrating to the USA.

There many who will argue what I have said here, I will not reply, I did not start the thread drift and will not promote it further. Mentally ill person kills someone, it has happened a thousand times globally since the incident we speak of. Not even news worthy. The news in LA should have concentrated on the delay at the airport, would have been more useful.
