Passenger plane crash lands on Moscow highway near Vnukovo Airport — RT

A passenger jet has crashed after taking a hard landing at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport, witnesses say. Two people were killed and at least three others were taken to hospital in a critical condition, says Russia’s Interior Ministry.

The plane may have been carrying at least 8 passengers and 4 crew. It was flying in from Pardubice, the Czech Republic. The airport's press service says that all the people onboard were the crew.

Preliminary reports say the jet, which belongs to Russian low-cost airline Red Wings, crashed after taking a second landing attempt. It rolled out from the runway into Kievskoye Highway, fell into pieces and caught fire. The plane broke into three big parts, reports RIA Novosti quoting sources. The incident took place at around 16:35 local time (12:35 GMT).

Firefighters and rescuers work on the ground. The circumstances of the incident are being clarified. Earlier, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry confirmed that the plane had to make a forced landing.

Part of the crashed Tupolev-204 has blocked the highway; a traffic jam is developing at the scene. Vnukovo-bound flights are getting diverted to Sheremetyevo Airport.

Red Wings is a Russian airline that specializes in charter flights to Russia and Europe. In 2012 the company began to operate regular flights throughout Russia. The company is the largest buyer of Russian-made Tu-204 airplanes.

Red Wings is owned by the Russian tycoon Alexander Lebedev. In November 2012, a company leasing planes to Red Wings filed eight lawsuits demanding some $65 million in debts. However, it was reported that lawsuits were just a formal procedure and the dispute between the two companies would be resolved out of court

The gantry in the picture above crosses the highway at the threshold of runway 02 - would appear that the wreck is aligned southwest so a landing and overrun on 20 seems possible..........

probably flight RWZ9268

Lifenews wrote Pardubice - Vnukovo (PED-VKO) Red Wings.

In short:
- it was only 11 crew onboard, no pax (confirmed RWZ)
- two injured (unconf)
- right engine catched fire at descend
- at 16:35MSK overrun and breaked in two parts, nose lies on Kievskoe hway, blocking it

Russian forums report all persons on board alive, two people injured badly. No passangers on board, only 11 crew members.

1stspotter 29th Dec 2012 12:55

2 persons reported dead. What a luck this was a ferry flight without pax.

Kulverstukas 29th Dec 2012 13:09

Two dead, 8 injured, one missing. :(

prayers to all involved, was this an endorsement/training exercise or actually ferry/delivery? any idea how the wx was like... This truly is sad.

Russia 1, The main TV station up here just said on the 6pm news that it crashed on its second attempt to land. News mentioned bad crosswind but Current Metar (17:30LT) is showing 280/10 kts, vis 10k and clouds overcast at 2000ft? Still waiting to hear at what time it crashed!

Looks to have come down short of the runway only by a few hundred metres

They have reported that 2 of the crew have died.

May they rest in peace. :(

thought

the tupolov 204 (considered broadley equivilent to the Boeing 757 or so) was virtually empty.

as many pilots know, such a lightly loaded plane demands extra attention for landing as it doesn't settle in for landing as a normally loaded plane. Indeed I recall the expression: we were so light that someone had to shoot us down to get it to stop floating the runway away.

in other words, too fast, too light, too long. add to this a slick runway (?) and it wold have been a demanding approach even with light winds and a good high ceiling.

- 3060mtrs? I think a bit more happened than that.

Flights have just started to land again into Vnukovo

Photo of RA-64047 prior to its accident is removed as it is apparently considered offensive by BOAC and Heathrow Director. Photos of the smouldering wreck in which 4 people died is however deemed acceptable.

Pistonprop 29th Dec 2012 15:21

Harsh and uncalled for BOAC. I think you owe HT an apology.

Sobelena 29th Dec 2012 15:25

I don't quite understand what BOAC is getting all hot under the collar for. It's not the first time that a photo of the intact airframe has been posted on PPRuNe after it has crashed.

BOAC 29th Dec 2012 15:25

NO! - this is a professional pilots' thread, not a spotters' thread. Google will provide millions of pictures of a TU204.for those spotters who need it.

Kulverstukas 29th Dec 2012 15:32

28/12/12 Rosaviation sent letter to Tupolev corp about malfunction of Weight On Wheels switches, leading to overrun at Tolmachevo (reverse and brakes not switched on)

HEATHROW DIRECTOR 29th Dec 2012 15:41

BOAC... well said, sir.

BOAC 29th Dec 2012 15:44

Kulver - interesting. Does the 204 NEED wow in order to deploy reversers and use brakes/spoilers or are we in another Congonhas airbus scenario?

I have not looked at 'the letter;' but is it the same airframe?

1stspotter 29th Dec 2012 15:46

Few hours after the crash 'Officials believe the cause could be pilot error.'

JanetFlight 29th Dec 2012 16:01

Ok, i assume this wont help anything in this thread, but however keeps very ironic and sad the fact so many spotters caught it few seconds before T.O at PED, for a last journey home:

RA-64047 - Red Wings Tupolev Tu-204 at Pardubice | ID 257368 | Airplane-Pictures.net

planes.cz - TU204-100V - RA-64047 - Red Wings ( RWZ / WZ ) - Pardubice ( PED / LKPD )

Kulverstukas 29th Dec 2012 16:04

BOAC no it was 64049 but unscheduled check and lubrication of wow switch affected all of the Tu-204/214 type.
Concerning reversers, 204 pilots just now discussing this (no wow signal at landing) at forumavia.

jungle drums 29th Dec 2012 16:04

The Vunukovo SW runway (I thought it used to be 03/21 - 20 years ago - but see that it is now 20/02) used to have a marked downward slope towards the departure end threshold.

I always thought it nerve wracking that the slope and hump in the runway was such that after landing and backtracking at the lower threshold you couldnt see any large airline aircraft coming at you from the takeoff threshold.

And the downhill slope looked like it would be sporting with any sort of speed, braking issues and runway contamination.

02/20 hasn't been in use for years - when was it opened again?

Heathrow Harry 29th Dec 2012 16:10

"I thought it used to be 03/21 - 20 years ago - but see that it is now 20/02"

renumbered due to movement of the magnetic pole - happens all the time

Kulverstukas 29th Dec 2012 16:14

JD, UUWW rwy 02-20 was at reconstruction 15/04/11 till 01/08/11.

BOAC 29th Dec 2012 16:31

204 pilots just now discussing this (no wow signal at landing) at forumavia.
- following you and your colleagues excellent help with the 'Polish' crash thread, it would be useful to have a precis of the 'discussion' if you can.

JanetFlight 29th Dec 2012 16:46

Isnt RWY 19?

http://avherald.com/img/uuww_ils19.jpg

Lyman 29th Dec 2012 16:56

Innocent question. The pilots are discussing "no WOW signal?" OR, are they discussing "no brakes."

The two cannot possibly be 'connected', can they? Because that would even be worse than a flight crew heads down diagnosing a bob (burnt out bulb) whilst putting a wide body into the swamp. Much worse.

BOAC 29th Dec 2012 17:18

A small allowance for language issues, Lyman? I assume it will be autobrake they are referring to, the effect of WOW on which which you can learn about on the Congonhas and other threads. Patience. I am sure Kulver will be along to help.
