JAKARTA, Nov 03, 2010 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- An airbus
plane operated by Qantas had an air accident in Batam island of Indonesia on Thursday, with some pieces of the plane falling down after an explosion in the air and the plane had landed in Singapore, local police chief Eka Yudha was quoted by TV One as saying. |
Apparently an A380-300.
Associated Press JAKARTA, Indonesia—Police and witnesses say they heard an explosion as a commercial airliner was flying over western Indonesia and found debris scattered near a shopping mall. Media reports, meanwhile, said that a Qantas Airbus 383 made an emergency landing in Singapore soon after dumping fuel. |
Thanks for the report and updates.
I will be interested in any hints what the pieces were that fell off. Pics, eye witness reports |
Sydney Morning Herald
A Qantas A380 has been forced to return to Singapore's Changi Airport after pilots were forced to shut down one of its four engines. QF32 was bound for Sydney when the engine failed. A Qantas spokesman said the problems were with engine number two. She did not know why the engine had to be shut down. The incident sparked widespread rumours over the internet through Twitter, that the plane had crashed, which Qantas said were wildly inaccurate. |
The rumours are stating that engine#2 suffered problems, Uncontained Engine Failure is the one coming up... :ugh:
Also the cowling could come off or something... remember that ENG2 and ENG3 are the ones with Reverse Thrust...and the cowling slides back... Thank God, the plane landed safely in SIN.. Pic of the Aircraft http://i51.tinypic.com/ilketf.jpg |
Well I never! The media blaming PPRuNe for saying the aircraft crashed!
|
Indonesian Media are showing photos of very large sections of what can only be aft fuselage or engine cowling (only sections of Qantas A380 painted Red/White) on the ground in Batam. Not getting all of it as its in Indonesian but an eyewitness speaking to reporter is also describing emergency exit placarding.
Will be interesting to find out what has caused this. |
Just heard on BBC Radio 5Live that the plane is currently trying to land back at Singapore.
They had also been reporting that an explosion had been heard over Indonesia. |
On 5Live a reporter in Singapore has just confirmed that the A380 landed safely.
Did this flight originate from LHR? |
|
Pictures on Sky News showing the debris. Looks like its made from carbon fibre.
|
local news in Singapore reporting that the plane has landed safely in Changi.
A380, more than 500POB. reports of smoke coming out of the engine and an explosion. Debris found on Batam. thank god all are safe. |
500 POB a 460 seater??? Must be standing room only! :suspect:
|
Hopefully the Mods will merge the multiple threads and tone down the heading to reflect a safe landing.
|
|
A spokesman for Australia's Qantas Airways said the plane was carrying 433 passengers and 26 crew and there were no immediate reports of injuries.
|
