But isn't EK and the GCAA run by the same person? Not very impartial I say.
Furhter the company I used to fly for (FECA) squeezed out so many exemptions, that those FTL's might as well be non existant.
Get this, you finish at 4AM and it is still not counted as an early morning, in fact it can be counted as your first night of for your RDO's. "Safety is paramount".

If a small company like FECA can get away with these things, just imagine what Dubai's favorite airline EK can do!:mad:

Ok, so who really cares if we got 3 or 4 guys in the pointy end? Whether it is SQ or EK? It’ll be legalized somehow by management and justified by company philosophy. But up to 18 hours?!? I mean I know how wonderful the pax get treated on either carrier but I wouldn’t be caught dead strapped down in any tube for that amount of time!! Should the A380 really once be offering a gym, a pool, a casino and an 18 hole golf course, maybe? In the meantime Ill see to it that I get a 7th inning stretch after no more than 10h.

As far as i'm aware,yes it is CAP371,chosen,i'd imagine,to ensure Emirates does operate within an established FTL scheme.Complicated,yes and certainly more restrictive than many other'schemes'in Europe.

No,not the same anymore as this is controlled from Abu Dhabi and they have their own interests to protect now with ETIHAD. It may well have been like this several years ago but Emirates are well aware that they need to aviod cosy arrangments like that if they are to be accepted by FAA.Further more,re. your posting,as Emirates now work under the UK FTL,we need to be 'off duty' by midnight to claim a day off.Not as good,i know,as restrictions they may have in the'better'UK Operators,but better than the 4am you mentioned .Who are This Company you ref.to? I've never heard of them.

Are you from across the pond? I ask only because,speaking to an American Airlines pilot a month ago,he appeared shocked at these long days. I know that they required 3 pilots just to operate a trans Atlantic from LGW to Miami but United must do some long sectors across Pacific.Mind you,have you seen the age of these guys. long haul US pilots are almost as retired as the flight attendants!Is the 3rd guy there in case one 'retires'early?

No, you are thinking of the DCA. Each Emirate has a Dept. of Civil Aviation which runs the airport, in Dubai's case they also own an airline. The GCAA is a Federal Authority and has no affiliation to any of the airlines.

Very much to the disliking of the EK DO and a couple of Australian and Zimb chaps who didn't have a clue.....how could they if you were trained in AFRICA.

The DGCA has followed after the very distructive ICAO audit done in 2001.

Just want to clarify about Civil Aviation Authorities in the UAE.

RADAR PETE is right. All UAE airports are run by a department called Civil Aviation. They are almost like BAA in UK.

The Federal Civil Aviation body in the UAE is called GENERAL CIVIL AVIATION AUTHORITY (GCAA)and this regulatory authority establishes the aviation rules and regulations that are mostly taken from JAR, FAR and their own.

UAE Minister of Communication is the Chairman of the GCAA.
