Red face Airtours buying Air2000

Heard a lot of rumours lately that Airtours is planning on buying Air2000! This may be another pie in the sky, but Air2 are even accepting the vouchers from Airtours for drinks etc.. .Last year it was the other way around, can't believe Air2 was that badly hit on 11/9. . .Anyone in Airtours able to comment?

Without malice to those of you who work for A2000 and First Choice, I think Airtours/MyTravel will eventually takeover 'First Choice'. The two failed attempts to acquire the company cost Airtours millions, which resulted in a great deal of damaged pride. They have never learnt to live with that humiliation. . .. .Ask yourselves this: Why would Airtours bother to spend more money seeking to get the EU directive, which blocked the second failed hostile bid reversed? There would be no reason to waste that money unless there was further hostile intent.. .. .The last time I spoke out on this subject I was shot down in flames. Airtours employed me then, now they do not, my viewpoint however remains the same; the company is rich and powerful enough to succeed.. . . . [ 08 March 2002, 08:43: Message edited by: sapco2 ]

Thumbs down

"B******S".. .Every tour operator carries everyone elses "packages". So if you book a package with any tour operator that gives you drinks vouchers rather than a 20% discount, the carrier/airline will take them and receive the cash from the tour operator.Eveyone is then happy. You paid too much, the carrier makes a profit on your drinks and your tour operator is laughing all the way to the bank. Mind you The Air 2bob wine is very nice.. .. .If any joining of forces takes place it will not. .be hostile just an attempt to get towels on those deckchairs still left!!!! . . . . . . [ 07 March 2002, 14:32: Message edited by: upperecam ]

You guys seem to think that you work for airlines, you don't, you work for tour operators. Airtours isn't interested in aquiring Air 2000 it wants First Choice and that it cannot afford. Perhaps Peter Long will consider a merger but it seems he's not interested. None of this has anything to do with pride, it's business that matters.

Hmmm. --- "I know, let's merge. There'll be no announcement, but as a transition, we'll accept your drinks vouchers." . .. .Airtours (MyTravel) is an airline wholly owned, operated, and governed by the MyTravel Group. They have no jurisdiction on who MyTravel Group plc buys and which airlines are merged into them; they are completely subordinate to the main company.. .. .Likewise, Air 2000 is an airline wholly owned, operated, and governed by First Choice/Unijet. They have no jurisdiction on who First Choice plc buys or is bought by and which airlines they merge into; they are completely subordinate to the main company.. .. .
quote:
Last year it was the other way around . . .

At no time were First Choice considering, or indeed in a position to purchase Airtours or any Airtours Group company. MyTravel is larger by far than First Choice and would not be under any threat of takeover. In fact Airtours fought hard to acquire First Choice, even offering to set up a rival, but were fiercely rejected by the EU.. .. .For several news articles following the progress of the previous takeover attempts:. . First Choice Takeover Fails . .Airtours bid for First Choice fails . .Airtours withdraws bid. .. .Or try this link: http://newssearch.bbc.co.uk/cgi-bin/results.pl?tab=news&scope=news&q=Airtours+First+Choice&x=12& y=6. . . .As with most other UK tour operators--especially after the decline in the industry--there is plenty of seat and other service sharing. If there are seats that the mother company cannot sell, they are only too pleased to gain extra profit by selling to other companies. That is the reason you can walk into Going Places (MyTravel owned) and if there is an Air 2000 flight, you can purchase a holiday flying with them and not MyTravel. So if MyTravel issues you with vouchers, you can use them on your Air 2000 flight because the money will end up back with them.. .. .MyTravel has been turned down in the past for the takeover, and have not tried again since 1999. Instead they have ventured into other areas: North America, Europe, etc. I don't think their first priority (or First Choice ) is taking over First Choice/Unijet at this point. They are more concerned with their, sigh, image change.. .. .And one more thing, where did this habit of calling the airline Air2000 come in? The airline is and always has been Air 2000. . .. .I wish people would get their facts straight before posting this sort of thing.. .. .Carry on,. .. .SFly. . . . [ 08 March 2002, 00:11: Message edited by: SFly ]

Airtours were very narked at failing to get First. .Choice a couple of years ago - second failure, cost millions and a lot of egg on face. I am sure that Crosland wanted to try again and that is why he made a challenge to the EC to overcome their. .last ruling BUT DC is now about to retire so is. .that urge still as potent as it was ?. .. .As for drinks vouchers - the last flight I made. .carried Airtours/Cosmos/First Choice pax to name. .but three - each company has different deals in. .respect of in-flight service. Consolidation means. .that such 'deals' take place - don't read too . .much into them.. .. .By the way - when was that European ruling due. .on the Airtours appeal ?

"Ididfly-once" should keep the share price in his sights, not the drinks vouchers. When the share price of First Choice falls, with an associated rise in My travel share price it might be reasonable to think that My Travel is in line to be taken over by Peter Long.. .. .Until then you might as well count the tea leaves left in the bottom of David Crosslands cup!

Well if 2bob are bought out, I hope it improves the shocking service ( pay for water on a long flight ) and improves security ( flight deck door open for 4 hours

Drinks Vouchers- yes We [amm] do take AIH drinks vouchers, only on sharers flights and with a mutual agreement that they take ours, not because we are all about to start wearing the same uniform. Same old boring argument if it happens it happens, they will still need crew to take pax on holiday, there not about to buy the tour operator then bin the airline, they dont have the capacity to do that, so we all could have a different name and boss, Mytravel or First Choice, the money still pays my mortgage whoever it is that signs the cheque.. .. .As for paying for water on long flights, YES so what, you pay for it on the short flights as well. AIH, MON,JMC,BY all charge for water on there short flights, and only 1 or 2 give 500ml free on longlaul flights, however those airlines dont have free IFE, we do, if you want all the freebees then go Sched and pay through the nose for it, Please dont slag off the service just because you had to put your hand in your pocket. As for FD door, well AMM take security very seriously , and have very secure measures in place, despite what you think you may have seen, so lets just leave it at that!

Lou Scannon,. .. .Your inference regarding share prices and take overs is incorrect. . .. .Airtours (or any company) is usually a prime target for a take over when there respective share price is trading at a discount. The companys total worth (capital) is low.. .. .First Choice would not 'take over' Airtours when their price is high because they would have to pay a premium to the share holders to make it worthwhile. It would also help if First Choice's share price was high at the time also.. .. .AFTER the take over was announced usually the share price of the company being taken over would increase and the company doing the take over would show a drop.. .. .Personally I dont see First Choice being taken over by Airtours. . .. .Hope this helps.........
