Catania (LICC): Volcanic Ash from Mt. Etna
If you are using Catania (LICC) as a destination or alternate airport, be advised of the volcanic activity of nearby Mt. Etna.
The airport is being closed regularly for sweeping of volcanic ash. The airport does not always re-open at the time 'advertised' in the NOTAMs!
Using Palermo as the first option isn't always recommended since most aircraft are diverting there, with the resulting ATC and handling delays.
The ash plume from Mt. Etna is normally seen drifting in a south-easterly direction between FLs 140-170, but refer to SIGMETs and NOTAMs for the official info!
Safe flying!
