Interesting that with all the issues at Spirit they are laying of 500 to 700 production staff because of the delivery slow down.

I can just imagine the conversation

Bean Counter manager: Production rate is down because of the FAA hounding us on all those quality escapes so let’s reduce the headcount to reduce costs

Production manager: We know we need to ramp up production so let’s keep those guys to help get in front of the QA issues so we are set up for success when we get the green light to up the rate

Bean Counter manager. But it will be at least 2 quarters before that happens in the meantime we can reduce this quarter’s costs which will juice my bonus !

Spirit may not be owned by Boeing but it now sure has a Boeing culture…..

It seems to me that the way forwards is not so much to create new practices, but to eat humble pie and retrieve abandoned ones. Start at the approach adopted by Bill Allen, quoted above, and work from there.

And when staff raise quality and safety issues, listen and act. Don't disregard or threaten.

It has always had a Boeing culture because, prior to being sold off in 2005, it was the Wichita division of Boeing, wholly owned and run by Boeing!
