Listening to the tapes at liveatc.net it doesn't sound like there was any problem. Since AA9666 appears to be a ferry flight for a B-763 aircraft out of storage in Roswell, New Mexico, I'm guessing that they didn't have 180 minute ETOPS and had to go north for suitable enroute alternates.

The flight plan for N380AN as filed according to FlightAware:

Aircraft is reportedly destined for CargoJet AW (Canada), so presumably en route to a conversion centre somewhere.
