Delta MD-88 Compressor Issue on Takeoff

Springfield Delta Flight Diverted After Compressor Blows - Story

Auricle slightly misleading since it says the airline blew a compressor. I think it should read the aircraft blew a compressor.

Most likely a compressor surge (a.k.a. compressor stall) - an aerodynamic event often heard as an "explosion". May or may not be actual physical damage, but (in a twin) cause for landing without delay.
