Pan-European ATC strike possible next week

Just being reported on the Reuters newswire that there will be a 24 hour walkout of French ATC next Wednesday, June 19th.

The dispute is over the planned future integration of ATC systems across Europe.

The wire finishes by saying it is expected that Greek, Italian, Portugese and Spanish Controllers are expected to participate in the day of action also.

Get the beers in boys

Although no NOTAMN has been issued yet it is widely expected for the French to impose a 12 hour minimum service decree with Portugal and Italy chipping in between 1000Z - 1400Z.

Air Traffic union's have notified NATS that there will be industrial action on the 19th June involving France Spain Portugal and Italy. It is in reaction to the centralisation of ATC services.

What a fun day that is gonna be!!!

The detail's that i have been informed of about the above mentioned strike are that each european nation will have a 4 hour strike/work to rule - with each country co-ordinating it so that they do not overlap - but there is one exception - THE FRENCH who plan to have a 24 hr strike/work to rule.

Round of applause to our European collegues, if only Prospect had fought PPP with the same gusto, maybe NATS would be providing a better service now.:o

Cool

Actually the situation is a bit different.
According to ATCEUC the organiser of the action ( the first co-ordinated Pan-European ATC action) the action will take various forms in various Countries / centres but all on the 19th of June..
For instance :
Italy and Greece will go for a 4 hours strike between 12 and 1600 local. Portugal will go on strike between 11 and 1500 local and France will go for a 12 hours strike. ( But the legal minimum service will apply )
Budapest airport will be closed 3 unspecified hours that day. etc...
Most ATC centres Unions will support the action ( with some notable exceptions of course..) , so chances of re-routings that day could prove very difficult.
The main reason for the action is to show the EU commission that European controllers a a whole are against the new PROPOSED RULES OF COMPETITION IN ATM as laid down in the revised draft for the Single sky initiative.

A nice day to plan for maintenance I guess....

And what happens in the UK, where we are working under more and more difficult conditions day by day (rather than some future amalgamation of services)? Nothing, other than we will be dealing with all the crap that results from aircraft routing around the strike-hit areas. I bet we will get the Germany-Spain flights etc via UK airspace again. Well done, Prospect, in supporting your members and European colleagues.

If the reports are accurate the UK ATCOs have just voted massively against a pay and conditions package. If no further progress is made then you can expect industrial action by mid summer.

We were not consulted about the action until we saw a letter on it last week. Then it is too late to arrange a legal strike.

The pay ballot is a different issue, however....

Any update

Does anyone have an update on this ?

I have contacted Air France & BA - nobody seems to know for certain whether or not this is going ahead.

Would appreciate any views or steers.

Thanks,

Keeders

The lastest news I've heard, although its still subject to confirmation and liable to change is this:
France 0400z - 2100z
Greece 0900z - 1300z
Hungary 1730z -1930z
Italy 1300z - 1400z
Maastrict UAC 1300z - 1400z
Portugal 1000z - 1400z
All refer to 19Jun....

....then Spain will have a General Strike on 20Jun.

NOTAMN's issued by Italy and Portugal so far, others TBA.

Spanish general strike

Everyone here is battening down the hatches for the planned general strike expected on 20th June.

All the tour companies are putting contingency plans into place, as Thursday is the biggest UK flight day here in Lanzarote.

They are talking about spreading the flights out over Wednesday pm. Thursday and Friday am. in an attempt to avoid utter chaos.

Any of you Fly-Guys out there got a heads-up on this one.

Cool

Dark star your info is not completely correct.
For instance I believe France will not be 100% on strike but will apply the minimum service , which is about 50% of normal traffic.
Maastricht will not be on strike one hour as you suggested., but just supports the action, like may others Centres, for the 4 hours duration ( no re-routings, no extra capacity etc..)
I think The CFMU FMD OPS will issue an information note with the latest details for all centres sometime tomorrow.

So my rostered afternoon London - Milan on the 19th is unlikely to get re-routed via Germany then ?

Looks like a 'fun' day in store for us all !
