Fascinating Tristan.....
It seems to me that all OPs (and VOCs and CO) are pretty bad things to have in the tin can cauldron of airliner cabins but solutions do exist to prevent the contamination of paying pax and unwitting crews (although the av world is a slow-adopter).
However, an issue not often discussed here, is that the longevity and bio-accumulation of these toxins in our environment may have rather worse long-term effects than previously thought.
Is it possible to stop using them altogether in aviation oil?
We seem to be seeding our world from above, rather like a crop-duster....contaminating all life on earth slowly. Or is that science fiction?

Possible yes, but as you say the aviation world is a slow-adopter. All jet turbine oils contain 2-3% TCP (one has a slightly different phosphate of similar structure). Removing an approved additive from a formulation and replacing it with different chemistry is considered a major change and sends the formulation back for full approvals. That process takes up to ten years and millions of dollars. Once one oil is fully approved the system may allow read across on the new additive to other formulations, although that is not written into the current process.

It is probably faster and cheaper to address the fume issue with some engine design changes or a scrubbing system in the air system.

It’s taking time but there would appear to be some progress towards recognition of aerotoxic syndrome. https://www.change.org/p/stop-contam...te&utm_term=cs

30 years after flight attendants of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA gave evidence to the US Senate in 1994, some US politicians on 23 May 2024 called for 'bleed air' to be phased out in the future...

Wizz air fined for not reporting fume events

Following our multiple “fumes” reports, the Romanian Labor Inspectionconcluded1 that Wizz Air failed to notify the relevant authorities of any events involving toxic fumes. As a result, the authorities fined the airline and ordered an investigation into the employer’s non-compliance

The remarkable contribution of the late BAe 146 Captain Julian Soddy who was medically grounded by the Chief Medical Officer of the CAA, his Norfolk GP, his wife and Union Balpa in December 2000. Captain Soddy went on to campaign from 2000 to 20/21 April 2005 when he Chaired the first ever Cabin Air conference in London, which set out on page 23: 'To get to the truth....'

Captain Soddy then appeared in a BBC Panorama 'Something in the air' on 21 April 2008:

Yet, 16 years later - senior Captain Tom O'Riordan of Aer Lingus who was made sick during a 5 June 2023 LHR-DUB 'Fume Event Flight', ambulanced to hospital, where he spent 5 days is still trying to convince his company that they have a duty to inform other aircrew colleagues & passengers of the by now, well known symptoms of Fatigue, Headache & Dizziness after an oil fume exposure....

It is beyond comprehension after so many decades of why there is No open public debate about this ongoing cause of mass public ill health.... especially for those choosing to fly jets for a living & WILL also get sick and face being misdiagnosed and mistreated by doctors who claim to still be unaware of this cause of mass public ill health.

The US legislation to phase out 'Bleed air jets'; mandate for CO sensors & loggers in ALL public transport jets & the US Bio marker blood test, which proves oil fume exposure - are all long overdue for the next generation of jet flyers - aircrew & passengers...
