Fedex A310 declares emergency/low fuel dec 23

nuerous reports indicate that a pilot of a Fedex Airbus 310 declared a low fuel emergency near Reno, Nevada, USA today.

The plane then diverted to Sacramento,Calfiornia International airport for a safe landing...emergency equipment was standing by.

Now, I was the first to call the local tv station to say that pilots don't declare an emergency for a routine diversion...but this guy evidently was low on fuel and said so.

The flight was Memphis to Reno. while normally reno is one of the clearest, sunniest places in the United States, today the visibility was 1/16th mile in freezing fog.

But I ask you all...this sounds a little funky. If they didn't have fuel for the destination, alternate, holding and 45 minutes then something was wrong. Even if the wx information/forecast was wrong, they should have had the metar while at cruise altitude and not at low level in the reno area.

perhaps, and i say again PERHAPS it is the case of trying to save money by not taking too much fuel

I encourage you all to google news fedex emergency for any reports.

PS, Sacramento is about 120nm from reno
