Post Another story from the anals of Singapore Airlines - inflight driving :]

This was an incident that happened at Singapore Airlines a few months ago that is truly worthy of a “Darwin Award”
A B744 freighter was bound for Dubai out of London. Amongst the varied cargo onboard was one of the latest high-tech smart cars, a BMW or something along those lines. However, this was apparently no normal motor vehicle, having not only been considerably performance enhanced but also having had the latest security make over.
The Captain on the flight recognised the uniqueness of the motor vehicle and during the flight decided to take a walk down the back to cast his longing, envious eyes over this beautiful piece of machinery. During the inspection he noted that the driver’s door was open – what luck! and didn’t think it would hurt too much if he were to just have a little sit inside the vehicle. Ah, the joy! So much joy, in fact, that the Captain closed the door to get closer to the real experience (we can only surmise as to whether “broom-brooms” were used to enhance the effect). But anyway, closing the door proved to be a rather poor use of judgement!! For the next thing our car connoisseur saw were the locks latching as the vehicle went into full security mode, and try as he may, the car simply refused to allow the Captain to escape. I suppose you could call it a variation of the SIA pilot-bonding experience.
Anyway, after an hour or so it started to dawn on the FO that the Captain seemed a little over-due. What to do lah?? So off the FO went, leaving the airplane to fly itself, to search for his lost commander. From here we can only wonder at the scenario that ensued. The end result was that the FO was forced to land the aircraft by himself in Dubai with the Captain still securely encapsulated in the cargo hold. For reasons that are still to be determined, the aircraft was then left parked on the runway.

Last word heard was that the FO is still trying to claim his first command sector.

Isn't it amazing how many variations of this story there have been over the past three years.

The first version I heard involved a Lufthansa capt and a state-of-the-art Beamer, then there was one about another German capt and a Merc, then there was the one about an American skipper and...etc etc.

OK there must have been some genuine incident to launch this urban myth, but not "a few months ago".

cheers

Don't forget the PPRuNe party at the Gatwick Thistle Hotel on Saturday June 9. Full details in PPRuNe Bashes forum.

Storyman you deserve your name. This story is as old as the Wright Brothers and I have heard it at least 20 times with 20 different airlines. A good story but you must be quite young, or unexperienced or just plain stupid to believe that this happened for the twenty first time in SQ.

Thumbs down

Are we struggling for material Storyman? I preffered your earlier tales of "truth" - at least they were original!

Keep the Faith :]
