Post NTSB site for AA 587

Note that the metal attach points have composite broke off above them.. Now all the other 300's are to be inspected to see if they are safe...... But can they? Several years ago a composite wing on an acrobatic aircraft broke in the USA. The other owners of the same type aircraft contacted every major and some minor companies who used composites in construction of their aircraft. No one ever said it was possible to test composite parts. If you sand bag a part and it doesnt fail, it only means it passed that test. Do it again with the exact load and it may fail. Unless they know something about testing conposites that I dont know, I may have thrown away a $25,000 wing.!!!!!! the site is is www.ntsb.gov/events/2001/AA587/tailcomp.htm null [LIST][LIST][*]null

Just read an article by an aerospace engineer who speculated that the repair made to one of the attach points some years back may have been overdone, resulting in more stress on the other attach points. He also speculated that the discoloration just above the break point in the NTSB picture could be signs of delamination, which would create a weak spot in the composite material.

Please try and keep topics to one thread. This is a continuation of an earlier thread and should be posted here: Topic: AA 587 -- Vertical stabilizer & composites (thread#3)
