Cool

V50.Remember your aircraft is only as safe as the engineers who maintain it!Correct me if i`m wrong, but Virgin just off loaded 60% of there engineers recently.Assuming there trying to maintain a normal operation, its not rocket science to see that those left still employed in an engineering capacity are going to be preety stretched, working within tight financial constraints.I think if Mr Branson could,he would rather have 2 engine A/C,because the fact is there a damn sight more cheaper to run,and in the current situation cash is the king at the moment

To all SLF
The one thing I worry about most when flying over oceans/desolate areas is the one thing that YOU have control over. A fire in the cabin or hold. Far more airplanes have been lost this way than because of engine failure. I am perfectly happy with ETOPS.
raas 767 - you are spot on.
An engine failure at 30W may increase my heartbeat for a moment, a fire in the cabin will almost certainly stop it for good.

Roketboots, I do hope you are not casting aspirtions on my engineering practice. There may be fewer people around (20% NOT 60%), but that does not mean that my skills or diligence has decreased in the same ratio. As for financial constraints, if it needs replacing / repairing we do it every time. The manpower reductions were also due to fleet cuts, so we still roughly have the same amount of engineers per aircraft.

Further to this thread we already operate a semi ETOPS regime, ie if a job needs doing on all 4 engines I will only do 2 of the 4 and then each engine has to be on a different wing (eg 1+3 or 2+4). As far as I am aware though this is now a common practice throughout the industry. This hopefully reduces the probability of any mistakes occuring across the ship and even on the same wing.
