Post Alitalia MD80 Emergency landing at FCO.

An Alitalia MD80-series aircraft, reg. mark I-DACR made an emergency landing at FCO airport this morning (11/7/01).

The aircraft was on a scheduled service from Rome to Palermo. On approach to PMO, it appears that the crew got a "nosewheel unsafe " warning.

The nosewheel was confirmed retracted during a visual fly-by by PMO tower staff. The Captain decided to divert back to FCO due to better services, multiple runways, etc.

The aircraft landed safely, skidding on the nose during the roll-out. The passengers were evacuated safely via safety-chutes. Most of these passengers embraked on the next flight to PMO.

Well done to all involved.

Seems like the whole crew did an excellent job in landing in foam and evacuating the A/C.
Well done ragazzi!
