Thumbs up KLM up capacity

From The Irish Times - breaking news section

Dutch airline KLM today announced it was adding flights to its summer schedule and edging closer to regaining levels of passenger capacity seen before the September 11th attacks hit demand.

Europe's fourth largest airline said its summer flight schedule was using 95 per cent of the passenger flight capacity available last summer, prior to the attacks in the US.

KLM has said its utilised capacity in the current autumn-winter period from September to March was an estimated 90 per cent of the level in the year-ago period.

Passenger volume has recovered since the post-September 11th crisis and is traditionally higher in summer than it is in winter, KLM said in a statement, pushing its shares and those of partner British Airways higher.

Analysts said the news was not a complete surprise.

"If we look at the monthly traffic statistics of KLM and the weekly traffic statistics of the Association of European Airlines (AEA), we already noted a strong increase in passenger traffic since September 11th," SNS Securities analyst Mr Geert-Jan Hoppers said in a note.

The AEA last week reported that passenger figures rose 4.5 per cent from a year earlier in the week ended February 10th compared with a 6.5 per cent posted in the week to February 3rd.

Like other European airlines, KLM cut its schedules after the September 11th attacks but it was among the first airlines which said in January that it had seen signs of a market revival and planned no more capacity or job cuts.

And for once the comp staff site even had it before PPRuNe! . .KLM will also put a stop to the austerity measures imposed on pax after sept 11th. . .It'll be close as to who will be more chuffed with that, the SLF or the FA's!

...or even the pilots, Flaps!

Its good news, and it merely confirms what most frontline staff have noticed in the last few months.

What would also be encouraging is to see KLM take this opportunity to put in place a strategy for increased competition with the Ryanairs and Easyjets of this world. Perhaps by merging / expanding Buzz and Transavia?

Ray, not to disappoint you mate, but from what I understand, it's only the measures that directly affect the pax which will be lifted.. .The rest of the package, affecting the employees, seems to stay in place until further order. (Not sure about the UK side, but we're still handing in leave and part of our holidays.)

Since you pointy end lads&ladies, unlike ourselves in the cabin, are not directly affected by happier pax, I did not include you in the above.

As for the merging/consolidating you mention; afraid I know too little about the management/financial side of things to make a useful comment. Did get a heads-up from a mate in Holland about rumours of yet another re-organisation of KLM. . .Hopefully less expensive and more effective than the 6 last ones. . .We live in hope

Smile

Just heard that KLM will be training around 50 new Effo's and 50 new captains on the 73's alone. Part of it to replace upgrading crew but most of it real extra crew.

Flaps, a whole new load of newbies for you to train to 73 operational standard.
