Red face ANZ 767 loses 5Kg wing part over Auckland

From the South Oz Advertiser:

"QANTAS engineers in Sydney cleared for flight an Air New Zealand jet that later lost a chunk of its wing over Auckland, the airline confirmed last night.

A spokeswoman for Qantas said staff who inspected the 767 jet in Sydney on Saturday afternoon found no defects on the wing, which lost a baseball bat-sized piece of metal – part of an aluminium guide rail.
"The airline's ground engineers inspected the aircraft during a routine transit stop in Sydney (and) no defect was found at that time," the spokeswoman said.

Air New Zealand's entire Boeing 767 fleet was inspected by staff and air accident experts following the incident. A 5kg chunk of the wing smashed through the steel roof of a store in Manukau City, a southern Auckland suburb, on Saturday afternoon.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, the airline said.

A passenger had reported seeing something hanging from the wing's edge as it landed at Sydney Airport before being turned around for the return trip, Air New Zealand spokesman Cameron Hill said yesterday.

But inspections by engineers found nothing, the airline said.

"They found nothing. The aircraft was cleared to fly back to Auckland," Mr Hill said.

The plane, flying from Sydney to Auckland with 148 passengers and crew, was on its final landing approach into Auckland when the solid aluminium rail broke free.

NZ Civil Aviation Authority spokesman Martyn Gosling said an inquiry had begun to find out why the part had fallen. The matter would also be reported to the Boeing aircraft maker, Mr Hill said."
