smoke in cargo compartment 25/08/08

hello everyone.

was flying earlier today and at about 13:45Z i heard a mayday call that i THINK was from Jordanian 111 but not sure.

all i heard was the pilot tell london radar he had smoke in the cargo compartment and requested immediate decent. the controller asked him if it was a mayday to wich he said yes its an emergency. he was then given a clearance for a rapid decent and priority landing into heathrow.

i was handed over shortly after this as was decending myself, so not sure how he got on. hopefully nothing major. not in the media yet so thats a good sign!

hope the crew are ok.

Almost all incidents of cargo fire warnings are actually due to the carriage of fruit and vegetables not adequately sealed. The condensation can actually damage the smoke detectors. There are hardly any incidences of fire actually burning in the holds producing smoke- it's all steamy moist produce. However every warning must be treated as real.

This thread had a logical question with no scaremongering.

It was followed by some educational information.

Then it was wrapped up by a closing fact.

If only heiniken did bulliten boards!

moderators....please close it now and preserve this moment for me

Just one critical comment to make. I actually seem to have been afflicted with an attack of 'actually'- 3 times. I shall try and do better! Absurd. I deserve an ASBO.

G'day Gents,

I had a divert into Stockholm years ago, in a B747-400, with a cargo fire warning which turned out to be a pallet of ripening fruit giving off warm ethylene gas which condensed in the cold compartment setting off the smoke detector.

Some carriers refuse to carry fruit for this reason.

For info, cargo compartment fire detectors don't detect heat they detect a reduction in air clarity and any reduction past a certain level will trigger an alarm. Smoke, misting etc.

Regards,
BH.
