Last Met Research Flight
I will be flying my last ever weather research sortie for MRF tomorrow (29/03/01). 
I will be flying back home from a very successful overseas trip, and on the way I will be making a low pass over my old home of Farnborough.
I would like to take this chance to say a big thank you to all in the industry who have helped me and my scientists over the past 28 years. I know I have got in your way, and asked to do all sorts of strange things at very short notice. You have always gone out of your way to help the METMAN. Thank You.
My scientists tell me my work has helped to vastly improve our knowledge of weather and climate, and on the way, provided information and knowledge that has helped flight safety.

I remember meeting you when I was a very young air cadet. Always wanted to come on one of your trips.
Any Idea of your ETA in Farnboroughs' overhead, as I will be standing outside my office looking up if I know your estimate.

I am fighting against stronger than forecast headwinds.

I first saw you at Cambridge at Marshalls
when I was a spotty cadet,
I had the pleasure of doing some design work for some of your equipment upgrade fits through a DTEO contract,

VMike,
No H.B. left the unit to return to flying more usual Hercs some time ago. As far as I know, he is flying Albert in the States at this time.
Old Timer, I think they plan to keep me in the hangar for a while, although not sure what plans are for me in the long run.
14116 hours on the clock, still fresh out of the box!

It would be criminal to scrap snoopy,
like you say, fresh out of the box,
I hope they find a good use for her
(him ?) or at least preserve her at somewhere like Duxford for example,
it would be far better to keep her flying where she belongs,
how about the crew ?
any good options for other missions ?

Snoopy returns!!! (Sort of)
The Met Office have announced that research flights will recommence in July 2002.
They will be using an upgraded 146-300 which will be based at Woodford near Manchester.
The performance will be uprated to allow climb to altitudes necessary for Met research.
The Met Office will have 50% access to the flights with the remainder used by universities.
Many thanks to Mrs cossack for the info.

To mark the end of Met Research Flight use of Snoopy, we held a reunion of past and present science, ground and air crews on Friday. Over 200 people made it, despite us not being allowed to widely advertise the event.
To all that came along to see me off.
Heard over the intercom after 6 hours around 85'N, flying at 200 ft over the Polar Ice cap 2 weeks ago. "Bet You Cant Do this in a 146! Still 4 hours of the sortie to go!"

I worked on Snoopy, before it WAS Snoopy at Colerne, when it was painted Crud and Custard.
Sad to see it go, it WAS one of the more noticeable Hercs, couldn't exactly miss it could you?
Take care and have a well-earned rest even if only in the minds of them that flew you.
All the guys that belonged to Met Flight, that I knew, thoroughly enjoyed it!

were you at the do on Friday, or had you even heard it was going on? We had to keep it quiet to protect delicate and sensitive nerves in DERA and the Met Office. Very embarrassing losing Snoopy when climate change and the Kyoto agreement is back in the news, and questions are being asked in the House.

You are indeed correct.
We have never had as many enquieries from UK government and university departments, and requests from the govenments and research organisations in other countries. There is funding via the EU and other such bodies. So why were we chopped?

All highly embarasing for the powers that be. That is why news of my final working flight, and fly pasts at Farnborough and Boscombe were kept quiet, and NO ONE was allowed to mention it to the press in case news leaked!
The so called replacement for me has not got the range or duration I have, but I gave it a marginal advantage on height, on a good day with not too much kit on! As for cost, once you take out the £13 million and 2 years to get it converted, the operating costs still favour me, now the bean counters in DERA or should that be QinetiQ have sorted their act out
Still never know, I may still end up in exotic parts, dragging the support equipment out to support the universities new toy. No ramp on a 146 to put all the support pack up on! :grin: I'll probably get there before them as well, longer range and duration you see!

EU for once NOT the problem. In fact the opposite. They are one of my larger customers!
Trouble is under the present rules they have no money to run me. Only money to fund individual projects and experiments. Although there may be money to support an aircraft that can do exactley what I can do in a few years time, by which time DERA or QinetiQ will probably put a JCB through my main spar
